The full story can be found by searching for "Hannah Laverick" on Trove http://trove.nla.gov.au

I don't really think it's appropriate to post all of the details on here.

MarieCeleste Report 14 Aug 2012 20:31

The Register (Adelaide, SA : 1901 - 1929)
Thursday 3 September 1903

ILLEGAL OPERATION PUNISHED.

At the Newcastle Quarter Sessions to night a charge of having conspired to procure an unlawful event with respect to Mary Laverick was brought against John Laverick (miner), Hannah Laverick, Jessie Hogg (nurse), and Amelia Perkins. The jury found John Laverick not guilty and the others guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of their previous good conduct. Mr. Justice Fitzhardinge sentenced each of the women to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour, and Hogg, at the expiration of the sentence, to find sureties for good behaviour for three years.

I dread to think what the illegal operation was ........

Other similar newspaper reports state that the woman in question (Mary Laverick) had since died.

Evening Eringobragh - don't forget to look for Jane Ledger marriages too :-S

There was also a Robert Laverick on the 1885 arrival in NSW. (But wasn't Hannah's husband called John?)

Eringobragh1916 Report 14 Aug 2012 20:12

Evening MarieCeleste...
Well I am still ploughing through the thread/tome ...
Trying to find/eliminate Jane Ferry Marriages from 1868 onwards...getting more confused as I go...

EDIT....Marriage John to Mary Jane Lumsdon Reg March Quarter 1870 Durham

MarieCeleste Report 14 Aug 2012 20:10

Here's one arrival for a Hannah Laverick - she's travelling with a child:

New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1922
Name: Hannah Laverick
Port of Departure: London
Port of Arrival: Sydney, New South Wales
Voyage Arrival Date: 4 Nov 1885
Vessel Name: Liguria

There's no image to view for this one:

Queensland, Australia, Passenger Lists, 1848-1912
Name: Hannah Laverick
Age: 26
Birth Year: abt 1858
Ship Name: Indus
Port of Departure: London, England
Port of Arrival: Brisbane
Arrival Date: 22 Aug 1884

There's no record of her returning to UK in the interim. Wonder if she arrived in Queensland first in 1884 and then travelled on a ship from Queensland to NSW in 1885?

MarieCeleste Report 14 Aug 2012 19:32

Hello Jane - could you tell us where you got the info from that John Marshall Blacklock married Mary Jane Lumsden? When and where did this happen?

(It's going to take me several read throughs to try to get back up to speed on this one!)

Eringobragh1916 Report 14 Aug 2012 16:37

Jane....

Given that we know Jane was evident in 1861 but is elusive afterwards the first thing I would be searching is a Marriage..then finding out who was witness at marriage Marriage of Hannah and John..could be her sister Jane.
All a series of elimination and hard slog I'm afraid.

I am sure if you request someone to have a look for Hannah they will do it for you..
Another avenue to persue is to locate Hannah 1881 Census see who she is living with.

Jane Report 14 Aug 2012 15:39

Hi,
Just had a look on Ancestry and found that Hannah Laverick nee Ferry made 2
crossings, one is on the 22Aug 1884 arrival Brisbane and one 22Nov 1885
arrival Sydney, New South Wales, one has information from the Passenger lists
1848-1912 provides evidence of arrival, name and birth, and the one had down
New South Wales, Australia, unassisted Immigrant passenger lists 1826-1922,
but I don't have the membership on Ancestry to be able to check these lists out. There marriage is down as April 1884 and Hannah's death is down as Wallsend, New south Wales, Australia, the 22Nov 1927 age 69. I am intouch with
a relative in Australia maybe they can give me the information on the shipping
and I could then pass the information on. I think the problem about Jane is that when her parents died the 3 youngest children went to live with 2 of the Blacklock
family and one of the Blacklock was married to a Jane and we thought it was our
Jane Ferry when it turnsout it was a Mary Jane Lumsdon he was married to,so all of a sudden we only had the 1861 Census that showed our Jane did exsist.
Thanks very much, but I feel I have to keep on trying to find Jane.
Jane.

Jane Report 13 Aug 2012 20:33

Hi I could'nt remember where I had got those details from but I have since
foundout in the last couple of weeks that John Marshall Blacklock was not
married to my g aunt Jane Ferry he was married to a Mary Jane Lumsdon
so it looks as if I have been on the wrong track for quite a while, I cannot find
anything out at all about Jane other then the 1861 Census where she is down
with Joseph and Isabella Ferrey ( Ferry ),after that it goes cold. Don't know really what else I can do. I wondered if she had gone to Hannah Laverick in Australia
her younger sister and married someone there but I am sure there would be
some kind of record of something. Any surgestions of what else I could try or
do would really help me.
Thanks very much
Jane.

Note that was a Jane Blacklock...not Ferry/Ferrey

Jane

Jane Report 13 Aug 2012 16:10

Hi I am still trying to find proof of my g aunt Jane Ferry born 1851/1852 her parents down as Isabella Ledger born 1831 Fatfield, Co: Durham and Joseph
Ferry born 1831 Pelton, Co: Durham,I have proof that Joseph and Isabella only
married on the 22nd October 1854, Chester.le.Street, this was 2 years after the
birth of Jane, but on the 1861 Census Jane is with the family and the name is
down as Ferrey.
I have tried to find a birth for Jane under the name of Ledger, Ferrey and Ferry no
luck. I have wrote down a Jane Ferry arriving in Brisbane , Australia on the 18th
September 1887 but don't have the name down of a ship so don't quite know
where I saw this. The other information I have is Hannah Ferry Jane's younger
sister arriving in Brisbane, Australia on the 22August 1884, her married name was Laverick. I had wrong information that Jane Ferry married John M Blacklock
but John was married to a Mary Jane, not the same Jane. If anyone can help me with the name of a Passenger Ship for Jane Ferry and any other information to
help me fill in some gaps it would be most appreciated as I have been going
round in never ending circles with this Ancester of mine.
Thanks
Jane.

Jane Report 3 May 2012 15:47

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me looks like maybe they did just live together as I
did try to get marriage lines but also none of the trees I have looked at has any
date for a marriage so have not been successful, I think maybe like Jane Ferry
and a birth record for her they will stay a mystery.
Kind regards
Jane.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 2 May 2012 21:03

Jane, up until around 1874 there was no pressure on parents to register the births of their babies so possibly huge numbers went unrecorded. Jane born 1851 may well be one of them.

Also, it's surprising how many couples in those days didn't marry (for whatever reason) but just lived together. Jane and John may be one of those couples as there doesn't seem to be a record of a marriage.

Jane

Jane Report 2 May 2012 10:07

Hello,
Back again wonder if someone could help find a marriage date for Jane Ferry 1851 Fatfield, County Durham and John Marshall Blacklock 1845 Pithouse Lane, County Durham, I tried the Record Office but they could not find a Parish
marriage record for them for me to be able to order a copy. I also enquired about the birth of Jane Ferry 1851 nothing so maybe she was registered under
her mother's maiden name of Ledger and her name was changed when Joseph
Ferry and Isabella Ledger married in 1854 but no luck with that one either, this is turning into quite a problem, wonder if anyone can give me anymore help or maybe it has run its course.
Thanks
Jane.

Jane Report 29 Apr 2012 14:27

Hi,
Not sure if this is my Jane but will check the information I saw on a members tree on Ancestry, there was quite allot on JonthanBlacklock and family but not much on John Blacklock and family, The strange thing about this is someone got intouch who was part of Hannah Ferry's family Jane's younger sister and it turned out she her husband and family were in Australia to because the person
asked me if I had any photo's of the Ferry family but I only had a photo of my g gran Rebecca and my g granddad John Fletcher so I sent them a copy as they
did'nt have any photo's of Hannah. I find it strange how it looks like half the family were in Australia. Then life is strange but Rebecca's daughter Isabel Fletcher ended up marrying an Australian Charles Hornby who came to England. Its like a great big puzzle that starts to fit together over the months and
years, but still some bits to find.
Will check this out and thankyou very much.
Jane.
