I think i was one of the lucky ones. I received a reply this morning..
Thanks for the advice though

Alisoun Report 16 May 2013 04:36

How can we see how many posts an OP(original poster ?) has ,or whether they are a new or old member?
Most of the comments on this thread seem to be by the experts .and refer to all kinds of thingsthat newbies just won't follow . I've been on for a while but only guessed just now what OP stood for .
please try and keep it simple . feel free to accuse me of hypocrisy as I waffle and don't always make sense late at night .
When new people do read through this type of recommendation it could be off-putting to see the system being criticised .

Hi Alisoun

Hover your mouse pointer just either on or underneath the avatar (photo) or blank space just to the left of any posting.

It will show ......................

Member Since:
(eg, 2006)

(eg, 15,000)

If you hover your mouse pointer over a poster's name, you can also see the membership number. It will show somewhere on your monitor screen .................. on my screen it shows at the bottom left.

Regarding the date of a thread ....................... it shows at the right of the top line to any post .................

you can see

Just double check every time you look at a post to make sure that you are not replying to a very old thread.

MarieCeleste Report 16 May 2013 21:00

Sylvia - just one thing, the membership number only shows on certain browsers. Since I changed to Chrome I can't see it anywhere.

Alisoun, OP for opening poster is a very widely used term on most internet forums. I'm not sure what posts on this particular thread are hard too follow?

This link gives some insight into forum conventions:

Graham Report 29 Jun 2013 09:20

Until recently I didn't know what OP meant. I've never seen it any where else.
As to posting on old threads I highly recommend it! :-D What is the point of keeping old threads on here otherwise? ;-)

jax Report 29 Jun 2013 19:45

If you want to waste your time posting on something that will not get a reply...just carry on then :-)

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Jun 2013 00:14

...... just expect to see someone post every time that you do it

"Graham, this is an old thread, and x, y or z is probably no longer a member. If you wish to contact her or him, just click on the name, and send her a pm. Or if you are looking for information, please start your own thread"

:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Sappho Report 19 Oct 2013 05:04

Hello all,

Some good comments here but I should like to add that perhaps GR could have some sort of flyer come up if a reply is about to be added to a thread of an original poster who is no longer a member of genes. So for instance if a reply hits the submit button then a red notice appears to say the poster is no longer a member of GR.

It comes to mind that we are constantly told not to delete threads, but some common sense is necessary here.

Any more ideas?

jax Report 19 Oct 2013 11:50

GR would not know if someone is not a member....Even if not a paying one at the time does not mean they will not come back

I made a comment to someone not that long ago that the poster may not be a member now because they had 'nil' posts by there name....3 months later the OP returned saying they were still here and suddenly had 54 posts!!!

You can tell some deleted accounts by looking at the joining date Jan 001 name of Unknown and nil posts...but others you would not know until you tried to send a private message, when a banner would come up saying the account has been deleted ect

Even if GR changed all deleted accounts with a name like 'Account closed' there would still be people that would try to reply

Hi Jax,

Thanks for your information. Just shows we are responsible for ourselves and therefore, the helpers are good at what they point out on the threads.

Your knowledge is these sites does you credit.

Thanks again - mine was just a thought eh!
