According to the book "Tracing your Ancestors-A-Z Guide" by Pauline Saul
entitlement to copyhold land could only be registered with the Manor court, so in the days before birth certificates, in order to prove descent, the surname of the father of an illegitimate person would continue down the generations either as a double barrelled name, or as an alias.
So in this case, it looks as though the original illegitimacy could have been several generations back.

If there was I couldn't get to it it.
It is rather strange and there seem to be a lot of ottwels in Flixton.

Maddie is right, this crops up more than once. How peculiar! I wonder if you need local help. Is there a main library with a genealogist anywhere near? Or a local family history group of some kind?

Thank you
but what puzzles me is that the and/ or name covers births from 1683 to 1773 so more than one generation

Possibly the father was born illegitimately & known by his mother´s maiden name, then took the surname of his stepfather when his mother married.

I have a John Johnson born 1799 in Flxton Lancs, father Richard and mother Ellen.
They appeared to have married in 1792.
IF I am right Richard was born 1773 Flixton, his father being James Johnson or Ottwells. There are several people on IGI with the name Johnson or Ottwell in Flixton.
Has anybody have any idea why the two names

thank you
