UPDATE ; The Hallis (hollis)family had a tough start ;John and Robert were paupers in liverpool workhouse in 1941 followed by brother Samuel who was then sent to industrial school .a son Edward may also have been in an industrial school in 1881. .All went on to have trades.Aged 60 Samuel and Mary 55 ,took in my grandmother (maisie)as a boarder he,d adopted her by 1911 . they lived next door to his brother,s daughter Martha Harriet and her 2 girls
.Maisie moved in with "aunt harriet" when Samuel and his wife died
she marrried in 1924 from their house .
my mother doesn,t think there are any living descendants to share her memories of this lovely family with, or to share her research into kirkdale industrial school.please prove her wrong.

EDIT I have Maisie details already on another thread .

The HoLLIS Boys were not the same family as Samuel Hallis
Martha Harriet Hallis was in fact his eldest daughter

Hi Brigid/Alisoun

If you want people to continue to help you with information on the Hallis/Hollis family ............. please do remove that tick.

It shows on the Index as meaning that the question you asked has been fully answered.

In fact, my advice to you would be to NEVER click any response as answered!

Alisoun Report 18 May 2012 23:11

thanks for that information and advice .
Not yet had response from the search tree man who has lucy broadfield from Bootle on his site . I,m impatient to know , if he hasn,t had time to reply to my last question yet .I could just request to view his family tree but it feels cheeky as his family won,t be on my family tree because no blood relation.
can,t find, any Gouldbournes or lilian broadfield on search trees at all
mum remembers "Aunty" lucy cookson and Tom as being childless but has no memories of Lilian so maybe she moved further afield

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 18 May 2012 23:15

I.m also going to contact anyone who knows Martha Evans on search trees as she,s my mum,s "great aunt Harritit" childrens pronounciation of Harriet her middle name .she probably died at same address , Greenfield st so should be easy to check if it,s the right lady

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 19 May 2012 07:42

What do you do when you get to a dead end ?The only lillian jackson didn,t have the right parents
Look at all varieties of how to spell Lily I suppose

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 19 May 2012 17:29

Aren,t people on here nice .
thanks to Rootgatherer,s info+ suggestions ,my 1 contact from search has offered to look in records office in Cheshire when he goes + see if he can find the right Lilian .
so never say never .
I find the records difficult to understand and missed that there was also a robert T broadfield i think from 1891 aged 12 so i,ll search him too.

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 20 May 2012 12:25

My mother thinks lucy and Tom cookson married on the same day as her parents edward jones and maisie hallis it was certainly same year 1924
but was theirs 15th nov 1924 too

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 May 2012 20:54

No, they did not marry on the same day

You will have to buy the marriage certificate to find the actual date ......... but the registration of their marriage was in the SEPTEMBER quarter of 1924.

Edward Jones and Maisie Hallis' marriage would be registered in the DECEMBER quarter.

re your posting on the Halls thread about John Hallis/Hollis

IF your John went under the name Hollis, and married a Mary E. Then lived in Toxteth Park, working as a Hairdresser

he is on the 1851 Census (in the workhouse), on the 1861 with brother Robert, and 1871 living in Toxteth Park with wife and children ............... and died in Sept quarter 1880, registered West Derby

I found it all on ancestry.

This looks like the marriage for the John Hollis that I've followed ......

Liverpool, Lancashire, England, Marriages and Banns, 1813-1921 about John Hollis

Name: John Hollis
Marriage Date: 15 Mar 1852
Parish: Liverpool St Nicholas
Spouse's Name: Mary Ellen Bentley
Father's Name: William Hollis
Spouse Father's Name: Henry Bentley

Please ... do not just accept what anyone tells you!

we are finding records, yes, but that does not mean that these people are really your relatives.

You HAVE to buy birth, marriage and death certificates to prove it all.

In this case, you need to buy the marriage certificate for John Hollis and Mary Ellen Bentley

that will prove whether or not he has the same father that you think he should have. There may also be witnesses to help further prove.

If you do NOT do this, ie buy certificates, you are just heading for trouble ....... going down the wrong path and collecting names that have no connection.

I am not willing to give you any further information from censuses, etc, until you do start proving that what I have already given you is correct.

I always feel that my function as a "helper" is to provide information but that information then has to be proved correct.

On the 1891 census above for Martha H Broadfield, the age for Robert T is 11/12 which is 11 months.

Robert T is not on the 1901 census with sisters Lucy and Lillian so possibly died.

Not sure if that T for Robert is correct as the only birth and death I can find is for Robert Fitzhugh Broadfield.
