Thank you all ;i was interested in what happened to all 3 brothers but Samuel is the one to add to our family tree even if by adoption he was our great-grandfather .he brought up maisie Roberts as his own until he died .somewhere between 1911 census and her marriage in 1924

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 3 Nov 2012 23:20

I have no proof that lilian was adopted but poor Martha harriet Hollis married robert broadfield in 1885 waited til 1891 to have her 1st child a boy who died within the year .then another 5 years to have lucy/lercy 1896 and another 4 before adopting /having Lilian 1900 only to have her husband die in the following decade .My mother said she was alovely lady and my grandmother remained great friends with Lucy all her life .Although she wasn't a blood relative she ws like a sister . Lucy +Tom cookson didn't have children of their own and were very kind to my mother +aunties .

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 4 Mar 2013 20:57

I found Edward Hallis(eldest son of Samuel) living with wife Ellen on 1911census in Samuel st . .(EDIT This is the wrong Edward )
daughter Ethel b1901
and neice MAISIE b.1909 Everton (presumably edward 's brother George's daughter)
so the trait of caring for other peoples children continues in this family

so sorry ANN/Cardiff I skirted over your 1st answer to this post assuming it was my grandma Maisie Hallis born 1 dec 1899 .

Thanks Andy ;are you related to them ?
My grandma 's name is transcribed variously as Mary .May Massie and maisie in different documents ;Surname is usually Hallisor Hollis but I wonder if the first letter could be mistranscribed elsewhere which could be why the 3 workhouse brothers disappear in 1861 census and 1871 (although John turned up at Olive st with wife + daughter )

Andrew Report 4 Mar 2013 22:26

No relation. Just do lookups on the boards,

Alisoun Report 5 Mar 2013 15:43

On 1901 and 1911 census Samuel is clearly handwritten Hallis with an A
This is the spelling on my grandmothers school certificate +her marriage cert .
Also i have this spelling for Martha (Samuel's daughter)on a certificate from"girls friendly society 1885 which she pased on to Nana Maisie as a treasured item .
Why do his Son Edward + Wife Ellen, daughter Edith and their neice Maisie b.1909 all have the surname Hollis with O spelling ??

Mary

Mary Report 5 Mar 2013 16:39

Ethel Dorothy Hollis born 19/4/1900 8b 450 died unmarried 18/4/1961 probate to Beatrice Ethel Crook and William George Hollis dock foreman £3451 4s 2d

baptised by Edward and Ellen Hollis in 1900 address 91 Abbott Street.

Anyone found the birth reg of Maisie their neice?

Maryb

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 6 Mar 2013 21:04

I.ve looked on freebmd for Maisie Hollis b1909 but not found her

re wierd spelling of Lercy for Lucy Broadfield ,my mother remembers that robert broadfield was illiterate his wife taught him to read from the bible so a combination of his pronunciation and lack of knowledge could have led to that the Maisie/jessie spelling alternatives in 1911census but is more likely to be a mistranscription from handwriting to print .(thanks for spotting that Andy)

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 23 Mar 2013 09:18

a Mary Hollis was in the workhouse for girls in 1841 census She would be sister to John ,Robert + EDIT THE HOLLIS boys(not Samuel Hallis) . I know their father was William in prison in1841 , but I have to go back further as i have William's potential brother Edward but can't check without knowing their parents name .
It's an amazing co-incidence as a GR member said his Sam woodruff Hollis was actually adopted aged 11 by Edward Hollis who was 59 at the time .

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 1 Apr 2013 16:07

whichdocuments shall isend for ? nana maisie's brother Edward could be in everton in 1911 married to Ellen with daughter Ethel+ neice maizie E.
or could be unmarried childless Edward Hollis who went to south africa to workon railways (found by an Ancestry friend)on returning to GB in 1930's he lived in Greenfield St . is that too much of a coincidence ,nana got married in 1924 from no.3 .

Thanks rootgatherer so that is the wrong Edward ;you've saved me the price of a wedding certificate .
the other one married a lilian alice hird (b1876) in 1897
In 1912 he left london age 40 to work as South African railway official is that a natural progression for a blacksmith ?
In 1936 aged 64 he comes to Greenfield street (where his sister martha h Evans still lives at no 3 with her daughter+ husband Lucy +Tom Cookson

seems unlikely that he had any children ....

I suppose if I get his death certificate that may say 1960 aged 84 died Birkenhead .
