Alisoun Report 18 May 2012 18:09

I challenge anyone to find what happened to my nan,s birthparents
Maisie( fellman )Roberts born dec 1881 to charlotte roberts in birkenhead
Father unnamed but as fellman was given as a 2nd name we think Fellman was his surname .charlotte gave residence as edgar st
Updated info thanks to ancestry wizards; this is the right Charlotte Roberts(,born 3/7/1881 )
father John b1852 ,mother carolineb1860
sister mary b1882married isaac irvine 1906
1901 her father and sis are at that address but she is not .
no sign of her on 1911 either census, because
Charlotte later married and had a "respectable" son but don,t know surnames or places,we suspect she moved away from birkenhead to marry.but may have come back when her dad died in 1906 i wonder if he left her anything or gave the £313 ,15s and 10d all to her only sis mary
If you follow this thread pls go to page 2 as 1st page is the wizards helping me with ,wrong charlotte apologies to them and to her descendents if I,ve tarnished her reputation.
we've come to a standstill til we get to Liverpool and can see that will .

Margie, unless I'm reading it wrong that Maisie in 1911 was born in Cape town?

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 18 May 2012 18:42

How do you know that the Charlotte living with Thomas and Sarah is the mother of Maisie please?

Margee

Margee Report 18 May 2012 18:50

Uh Oh! That's a big Oops on my part, rootgatherer, I didn't look at the original. I usually always do so. Capetown, South Africa it is.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 18 May 2012 18:56

No problem Margee.

I think we need Alisoun to come back and help us here. I'm not seeing Maisie on the 1901 never mind the 1911.

It would be good to know what proof there is that Charlotte is the daughter of Thomas and Sarah. Without a marriage certificate how would you know her father's name? Without findin Charlotte and Maisie together on a census I think we are just guessing.

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 18 May 2012 19:01

on maisie,s birth cert charlotte roberts is listed as draper,s assistant living at edgar* st
very near to menai st .birthplace and fox street where baby maisie boarded with Hollis family in 1901
It could be a different Charlotte roberts but didn,t find any alternative mothers

thanks I know everywhere my nana maisie lived but it,s charlotte who,s shrouded in mystery
in 1901 nana was listed as may Roberts (transcribed in print as Mary) By 1911 census has Maisie Hallis adopted by samuel +mary and she certainly used Hallis at school and work
her marriage certificate to edward Jones doesn,t list her fatherand she,s down as Maisie fellman Roberts otherwise known as Maisie Hallis
don,t know when adoptions became legal

The saddest part of this story is that as an adult Maisie did track her birth mum (without a team of internet helpers)who wrote back for her not to contact her again as she was married and her son was in a "respectable "profession. My aunt found this letter after her death but decided to throw it away so we don,t know the details . But maybe as they all lived so close another family member told her who her birth mother was and where to find her :-(

shirley My mum could have done with you lot in 1988 when she started looking for all these records I,ve looked for Mendal Fellman George,s mother ?too but maybe she,d remarried or died by 1901 . Does anyone know what "Living on means " indicates as proffesion here; some kind of benefits (I know Jewish societies did organise relief for the poor)or had they come to GB with personal riches

From new thread:

Hi still looking for what happened to them accidently pressed "answered" to one section that had answered a question for me . so please go back to latest comments on that site if you,re still interested in helping .

I.m going to ASK MY MUM HOW SHE,S SURE IT,S THE RIGHT cHARLOTTE ROBERTS without any more details on birth certificate
But was told to find father it was common around 1900 for mother,s to add father,s surname as a middle name ,and fellman is more like a surname than a 1st name

Have explained to come back and continue on here.

Hi Alison, I'm afraid GR Rules are one thread per family. It's for very good reasons, mainly that research doesn't get duplicated on the different threads, and also it helps us enormously if all of the info is in one place (we have all the background info and can cross-reference, etc).

I'll copy the info over again from that other thread then please go back and delete it.

(Don't worry - we'll get there!) :-)

From the other thread:

George Fellman
Hi still looking for what happened to him - on Maisie,s birth certificate Fellman is middle name. Roberts is her mother,Charlotte,s surname

But was told to find father it was common around 1900 for mother,s to add father,s surname as a middle name ,and fellman is more like a surname than a 1st name
Sorry still finding my way round this site and the typewriter
now seperate thread for george jacob fellman born 1870 in russia mother mendel roberts lived manchester 1891
birkenhead 1901 but where did he go ?
