Hi, Menai street was close to Birkenhead Maternity Hospital (The Grange) on Grange Mount, Birkenhead...not particularly an unmarried mothers hospital so I would guess your ancestor was born at home in 1 Menai Street.

It makes more sense that a 17 year old would have an illigitamate baby than a 24 year old but how am i going to break it to my mum that all her research was wrong ,she even went to all the houses the family lived in and traced ancestors to Anglesey and went there . so what were this family doing in 1911 :-S

Mary may have married, her father may have died by 1911.

The only marriage for a Charlotte Roberts in Birkenhead was in 1913,,,she may have married earlier and out of the area?

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 19 May 2012 01:51

well greenfield st ,is where charlottes daughter maisie lived from at least 1911 to 1924 at no.3 then no 1
so that,s an interesting coincidence ;we.ll probably have a family trip to birkenhead to find out more .

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 19 May 2012 01:57

the rumour is that she moved away from birkenhead. so is this now a dead end ?
I edited my original post ,someone advised me to nudge a thread to keep it lively
apologies to all those who sent details of Charlotte born 1877

This was a lucky find!! The first John Roberts I looked at!!!

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1861-1941 about John Roberts

Name: John Roberts
Probate Date: 22 Jul 1908
Death Date: 4 Jul 1908
Death Place: Birkenhead, Merseyside, England
Registry: Cheshire

from image:-

John Roberts of 29 Edgar Street, Birkenhead, fitter, died 4 July 1908 at the Union Infirmary, Birkenhead. Administration [granted] Chester 22 July 1908 to Mary Irvine (wife of Isaac Irvine). Effects £313 15s 10d

so we know from that that he died in 1908 ..... hence not on the 1911 Census

Daughter Mary seems to have married Isaac Irvine

Union Infirmary was probably the Infirmary section of the Union Workhouse, Birkenhead ....................... not that he was in the workhouse, but the infirmary part was often the only place for an ordinary person to get medical help.

It is possible to buy a copy of the will to find out how he had left his money and effects.

Thanks so much Sylvia having christening date will help me eliminate some of the many possible Charlotte roberts i.ll come across .

after giving birth at 1 menai st dec 1899 I wonder if she stayed there with her baby before putting her to Board at fox st in 1901.
how could she afford to pay to have her baby boarded?

She wasn,t back with her father and sister at EDGAR st

who else lived at 1 menai st IN 1900 ?

There was a john Roberts resident at No 5 fox st in 1906 but was he still there on 1911 so not ours
The plot thickens

This is absolutely fantastic raises my hopes of finding living relatives
I don,t know how you know where to look .
I hope someone can use all the marriage and birth certificates I have from the wrong Charlotte Roberts dating back 4 generations
and maybe mum can go to Birkenhead and visit her real grandfather,s grave or house ! so thanks again to evryone and well done root gatherer for spotting the discrepancy and making me question what we thought was a certainty

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 19 May 2012 19:37

I told mumthat her months of research in 2008 was wrong but then said what wonderful help we,ve had getting closer to the real Charlotte Roberts
it would be good if she turns out to be Charlotte Prescot married in 1902 because that was a piece of her original research she discarded (because fathers name "wrong" or that Charlotte 7 years younger)
keep old research!
I.ll show her this thread tomorrow so she can see this huge supportive atmosphere maybe we,ll have made some more progress in our hunt too

THERE IS A SUMMARY OF FINDINGS ON PAGE 7

This is along thread with several families mentioned so I hope to save you the hassle of reading it all .
