This is absolutely fantastic raises my hopes of finding living relatives
I don,t know how you know where to look .
I hope someone can use all the marriage and birth certificates I have from the wrong Charlotte Roberts dating back 4 generations
and maybe mum can go to Birkenhead and visit her real grandfather,s grave or house ! so thanks again to evryone and well done root gatherer for spotting the discrepancy and making me question what we thought was a certainty

The Dicks family lived at 1 Menai street in 1901

not related then but at least we can rule it out
it feels like a detective story ,

I told mumthat her months of research in 2008 was wrong but then said what wonderful help we,ve had getting closer to the real Charlotte Roberts
it would be good if she turns out to be Charlotte Prescot married in 1902 because that was a piece of her original research she discarded (because fathers name "wrong" or that Charlotte 7 years younger)
keep old research!
I.ll show her this thread tomorrow so she can see this huge supportive atmosphere maybe we,ll have made some more progress in our hunt too

I spent many hours last night looking for possble marriages or any charlottes born Birkenhead 1881/82 and not coming up with anything

Maybe you should get a copy of her fathers will to see if she was mentioned in it

It is not a good idea to keep editing and changing everything as it makes the thread difficult to follow....you should just add the extra details.

Could there be a chance that she actually left the country after Maisies birth?

Unless her father disowned her his estate would have been worth approx £20,000 in todays money so she may well have got a share

Edit - when you look at what the average wage was back then approx £1 - £2 a week that was a lot of money, it does'nt really make sense with the conversion but you could probably buy a house with that money back then

well it would be a big difference if they shared it between them or she had it all .what if she couldn, trace her own sister she may have had to wait to legally inherit
She was quite young and from a solid Birkenhead home but maybe she did leave country think it,s too vague a lead to follow unless there were definite clues also my grandma did find her as an adult though wether before she married1924 after she,d had kids of her own 1934 or after adoption laws changed in 1973 we don,t know
just thought ,she could have stayed legally sg and just called herself married which would explain why she was so scared of being traced and losing her respectable veneer

where to find more clues;
1 I,m going to look at deaths fro Charlotte Roberts in case she kept her maiden name on official docus
2) would her baptism document name godparents ? we need to find if there,s a connection with the Hallis family who boarded her adopted baby ,All the young ladies in those streets seemed to be dressmakers and drapers assistants maybe a work connection
3) ask the kind man with the aunty lucy cookson link if he'd mind looking at John roberts' will when he goes to record office on thurs
The suspense is killing me .

It is all "What ifs" You do not know what happened with this family only what your grandmother could tell you. There was no legal adoption until about 1927 so Maisie was just probably taken in by a friend or relative of the family.

Unless a charlotte can be found that matches her birth details, I think this has come to a dead end.

Your only real hope of perhaps finding a name for her is by obtaining her fathers will

don,t forget people power it only takes 1 of the "respectable"charlotte roberts connections from search trees to come up trumps with a marriage that they can connect to birthdate1881 +place birkenhead .
I,ve left 10 messages since 16th may with hopefuls although a few didn,t know exact birth year or place and my early requests were for wrong Charlotte , 4 messages are unopened some may only visit site weekly or have stopped using it .

although Maisie Hallis nee Roberts never met her half brother she married a man with 5 full brothers and a sister and several half-siblings as two widowed people married ,The Jones welcomed Maisie into their family .here are her daughter sylvia.s recollections "my mother was very sociable and loved to be surrounded by people .we shared a house with uncle arthur and his family "This generation of cousins still have family reunions .
lucy cookson from next door was like a true sister to maisie and was the favourite of the aunts ,she had no children of her own so doted on maisie's girls ;hazel heather and sylvia .
It.s possible that Lucy like her sister Lillian had also been adopted .
we continue the search for clues thanks for any info given so far . alisoun and brigid

we also have a chance of tracing Charlotte Roberts through her sister Mary who married Isaac Irvine and lived in tranmere birkenhead
their son alexander Irvine was born in 1910 in birkenhead . .

I now have baptism details for Maisie march 1900 .She is listed as maisie myriam roberts there.Her mother is called Lottie roberts on that record and listed as lving at Elgin st (no Number) so that is new leads to follow.

So at least it confirms the correct Charlotte
