Brenda Report 22 May 2012 22:49

I'm looking for any information on my gt grandfather, James Jukes. Born Middlesbrough but living in Hartlepool early 1900s. He may have jumped ship some time after 1913, leaving my gt, grandmother with 6 children to raise. Any info would be gratefully received.

Hi Brenda, when you say he "jumped ship" was he actually in the Navy or do you just mean he ran out on her?

This is the closest I can find in 1911 (age for James is 44, b 1867 on original):

Three children born and still alive. There is a daughter Elizabeth age 25 entered on the original and then crossed out - must have been elsewhere.

** If this isn't the right record could you let us know which one is? Who were his wife and children.

Roughly when was he born?

Or - you have your gt gm's name so we can start off by looking at the census.

That way we might be able to find possible deaths for him and maybe there will be clues to fill in the missing years.

This is the only James I can find in that area

That one would match the James that MarieCeleste found on 1911.

We need Brenda to come back and tell us his wife's name. If it matches that family, we have a mystery.

Hi Brenda,

Looks like you hit the wrong buttons sent a reply to me by pm instead of posting it on here. So I've posted it for you.

When you post to the thread you use the reply box at the bottom of the page and press submit.

He married Alice Grasby c1905. Their last child was born c1913 and he disappeared after that. Shipping company he had been working for told my gt grandmother they had no idea what had happened to him.

pm from Brenda (in my reply to my "jumped ship" question)

He might have been in the merchant navy. When my gt grandmother went to the shipping office (to collect the money he sent every week) the staff there said he was no longer on the ship and they didn't know where he had gone.

Not sure if this is our man, perhaps Brenda could confirm the family?

This chap lived 21 Stephenson Street and next of kin was father Rubin, mother Mary, brother John and sister Lizzie. He was a labourer for a Mr Dring.

EDIT: there's a tree on ancestry has James' parents as William and Rose Ann, so this may be a different James.

If James was ship's crew he could have ended up anywhere in the world. We need Brenda to come back and confirm his family details - if he'd perhaps died overseas then some countries records give parents names which might help us.

Brenda

Brenda Report 17 Feb 2013 10:01

James Jukes was married to Alice (or Mary Alice) Grasby. I can confirm that the info posted by JustDinosaurJill (23 May2012) is my gt grandmother and her children. James was the son of William Jukes and Rose Gibson. After James abandoned his family, local newspaper reports confirm that Alice and her children were eventually sent to the workhouse because William could not support his daughter-in-law or his grandchildren.

Thanks Choccy. Family folklore suggests he went to Australia. I have no evidence to prove or disprove. Any suggestions for moving this forward, anyone?
