I'm looking for any information on my gt grandfather, James Jukes. Born Middlesbrough but living in Hartlepool early 1900s. He may have jumped ship some time after 1913, leaving my gt, grandmother with 6 children to raise. Any info would be gratefully received. |

Hi Brenda, when you say he "jumped ship" was he actually in the Navy or do you just mean he ran out on her? |

This is the closest I can find in 1911 (age for James is 44, b 1867 on original): |

That one would match the James that MarieCeleste found on 1911. |

Not sure if this is our man, perhaps Brenda could confirm the family? |

This is the only Merchant Navy record similar to his name: |

If James was ship's crew he could have ended up anywhere in the world. We need Brenda to come back and confirm his family details - if he'd perhaps died overseas then some countries records give parents names which might help us. |

James Jukes was married to Alice (or Mary Alice) Grasby. I can confirm that the info posted by JustDinosaurJill (23 May2012) is my gt grandmother and her children. James was the son of William Jukes and Rose Gibson. After James abandoned his family, local newspaper reports confirm that Alice and her children were eventually sent to the workhouse because William could not support his daughter-in-law or his grandchildren. |

Thanks Choccy. Family folklore suggests he went to Australia. I have no evidence to prove or disprove. Any suggestions for moving this forward, anyone? |
