Thanks for that. So the entry I found for Canada to hawai to australia was probably her return journey from visiting her sister in Canada.

I'm wondering whether Elizabeth Drury's maiden name was Faulkner.

patchem

patchem Report 5 Jun 2012 13:32

Cannot see a Drury/Faulkner marriage, or a variation on Drury either.

Sarah Report 5 Jun 2012 13:45

No I know I couldn't find one either but perhaps they never married? Feel like I'm going round in circles! I do love a puzzle though.

So still haven't been able to link this Elizabeth Drury to my step grandfather George Henry Drury. I located the L Flood who was listed on her death certificate and found that Elizabeth lived with her and her mother but I have searched their families wider and not found any other Drury connection there. Anyone got any other ideas?

below from this site
https://www.deceasedonline.com/servlet/GSDOSearch you need credits to see info but i have never used it so not sure what you would find BUT she may have been buried with husband so you might find info about him or if you can go to the cemetery you may find more info on a headstone?

Thanks for that. Just purchased some credits and in addition to the information you provided jansmith here is what else was there:

Authority London Borough of Islington
Cemetery Islington Cemetery
Grave reference Z/17549

It does list quite a few other people but they were people all buried in 1946 and I would say are unrelated to her - all different surnames. I also looked at the scan of the burial register which states:

Elizabeth Drury
Abode: 284 Essex Road N1 Islington
Burial 28 Feb 1946
Age 82

There is also a burial recorded for a George Henry Drury 12 Mar 1914, aged 64 living at Holborn Infirmary, Islington - could be Elizabeth's husband - her death certificate states she was a widow and given my step grandfather was called George Henry - this is a possibility. - it would make him considerably older than her though

Have just emailed the cemetery to see if they can check if she was buried with anyone so fingers crossed!

Had an email back from them and it turns out that Elizabeth was buried in a communal grave rather than a family grave along with unrelated people. They couldn't find a George Drury buried there before 1946 either. Worth a shot though! Back to the drawing board!

That is strange!

After my mum's come back from her holiday, she's going to send off for George Henry Drury's RAF records to see what information that holds - we've now found his death certificate so we can send that off with it. Hopefully, it will show some next of kin details.

Have had a break on this at last! Managed to find that Elizabeth Drurys maiden name was Dean and shows up on 1911 census as follows:

1911 England Census about Elizabeth Dury
Name: Elizabeth Dury [Elizabeth Drury]
Age in 1911: 42
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1869
Relation to Head: Head
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Brighton, Sussex, England
Civil parish: Islington
County/Island: London
Country: England
Street Address: 2 William Street, Islington
Marital Status: Married
Years married: 10
Estimated Marriage Year: 1901
Occupation: DRESSMAKER
Registration district: Islington
Registration District Number: 10
Sub-registration district: Islington South East
ED, institution, or vessel: 54
Piece: 956
Household Members:
Elizabeth Dury 42
Catherine Sarah Brown 55
Henry John Brown 30

The people she is living with are her sister and her son. It states that she married in 1901 but there is no Elizabeth Dean marrying a George Drury around that time so perhaps they weren't married. In the earlier census returns although she appears as Drury she states she is single just to confuse matters! She never appears on any of the census with another Drury either. My step grandfather always matained there was a Faulkner connection which I have now managed to find. Elizabeth Dean's mother was Sarah Faulkner.

So what I'm trying to locate now is the 1881 censu return for Elizabeth Dean - most census returns for her state she was from Brighton although she was born in Islington. I'm also trying to find a marriage for her to George Drury or perhaps she married before she married George. Any help would be much appraciated.

patchem Report 8 Nov 2012 18:12

Have you found the sister and son in 1881?

Sarah

Sarah Report 8 Nov 2012 19:04

Yes Elizabeth's sister is living with her husband and son in South Hornsey in 1881 - no mention of Elizabeth though. Also I've found their parents in 1881 and she isn't listed then either.
