John Mannion and Lucy Hollinshead Marriage

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Philip

Philip Report 10 Jul 2012 11:31

John was single in 1901 census, he appears to be married by 1911 as he has had 5 children, 4 still living in 1911, Lucy died in 1918.
So can anyone tell me when and where they married.
I have tried every sensible variant of both names but still cannot find it.
John was born in Galway, Ireland, 1867- 1871, Lucy b 1882, in Chasetown, Staffs,
The family was living near Lichfield, Staffs, Swinfen is given as the birthplace of all children up until 1911.
Please anyone! I have searched for a decade now.
Phil Wood.

There is a birth for Lucy Hollinshead on Staffs BMDs 1882, and as per yesterdays thead ( and thanks for PM Philip) there are also 3 children that Philip knows about after the 1911...all Mannion with mmn Hollinshead.

Not been able to find a marriage though.

John was considerably older than Lucy - perhaps he had a wife back in Ireland, and was thus unable to marry her

1911 does state that John was married, and it also states that Lucy was married and next to her name it is noted she was married for 8yrs.

............so could it be that the couple never married, because she was married to someone else?

However there are other John Mannions,on 1891 1901, single from Ireland, one married...but you'd need to know his father's name?

Philip is new to posting so I have just told him how to reply on the thread, via the purple 'add reply' or reply box at foot of page :-D

Thanks to all who have helped me on this subject. Sorry that i had not posted all replies but I am new to this facet of Genes Reunited and was on a different page. Rose has guided me through the process so special thanks to Rose
I shall now have to digest the new infomation, and make some assessment upon whether Lucy had a prior marriage to Mr Stockton, if she did he did not die in the next few years so if Lucy married John Mannion, it seems likely that it was bigamous, or just a convenient term used on later censuses and death certificates.
I suppose the reality is that I may never know the truth!
Thanks again to everyone. Phil
Good luck everyone.

PM RECEIVED

The name was given by my wif'e mother who remembered her mothers maiden name, this was confirmed with BMD record, Vol 6b, p 451

-------------------

The reason I asked was to see if the children's birth certs mentioned a previous married name for Lucy.
If you could pinpoint a previous marriage which did not result in the death of first husband, ir's likely she and John just lived together as man and wife.

Of course they may have married in Ireland or Scotland for instance

Philip

Philip Report 11 Jul 2012 11:56

Mike, There is a marriage of a Lucy Hollinshead to a William Stockton in 1902 in Stafford. Now if this is her, she had a stillborn baby in Nov 1903, which is counted as a child in the 1911 census with John Mannion as the father.
The time between the Stockton marriage and the stillbirth child makes me feel this is a different Lucy Hollinshead.
I now am more convinced that she and John Mannion, just lived together for their own set of reasons.Phil.
Thanks for your thoughts.
