Hi. I'm researching Phillis Dickens, lived and worked in Red Bank Manchester as a confectioner. Born 1796. Daughter was Susannah who married Conley. Any help from others much appreciated. Thanks :o)

Hi everyone. Wow! What a lot of responses! Yes, 1796 born. Sorry, my mistake. The line goes from phillis dickens (married name I think but I don't have a hubby for her), daughter susannah dickens, married william conley/conlay, had william albert conley married to mary ada then edith cooper, second marriage produced edith conley plus 3 other girls, edith married frederick albert taylor, they had my mum. I know phillis was a confectioner in red bank manchester but have no record of hubby. Red bank was a jewish immigrant area but I don't think she was jewish because of occupation and time of living there. There was talk in our family of susannah being french and running off from france with a catholic priest but I can't find any evidence of this!

I am going on holiday soon so I will read through all the above info when I get back. Thanks everyone. I'll also upload my latest tree. Does anyone know if I can upload 2 trees?

Catherine

Catherine Report 26 Jul 2012 09:36

It's possible that Phillis remarried:-

Marriages Jun 1854 (>99%)
CLAY John Manchester 8d 433
Dawes William Manchester 8d 433
DICKINS Phillis Manchester 8d 433
SIDDALL Sarah Ann Manchester 8d 433
Tonge Richard G Boughton 8d 433
.................................................................................................

DICKINS Phillis CLAY John Manchester, St. John Manchester STJ/13/244
................................

This Phillis was married before:-

SHAW Phillis CLAY John Manchester, St. John Manchester STJ/13/244
..........as the marriage is also noted under the name of Shaw.
(Remarriage. Where the lady is remarrying and both her maiden name and former married name are on the entry in the register, then both are listed in the indexes. It is not possible to tell from the indexes which is the maiden name.)

I couldn't find a marriage between William Conley (or variants) and Susannah Dickens?

Have you got the marriage cert.?

The marriage cert. should give the name of her father who would normally be the husband of Phillis. If she didn't know who her father was then it will not be noted of course but it would help to know the details of the marriage certificate, so if you have the cert. could you post any details that may be on it please.

Jill

Jill Report 26 Jul 2012 10:02

I don't have the marriage certificate unfortunately. Bit of a daft question but where could I get one? Manchester town hall?

Jill

Jill Report 26 Jul 2012 10:10

Between 1861 and 1871, Susannah has disappeared and William is living with the kids with the Barratts. Is there an address for that record? Also, it looks like phillis' husband is josiah, is there an address?

Catherine

Catherine Report 26 Jul 2012 10:10

That's interesting:-

groom's name: Joseph Dickens
bride's name: Phillis Shaw

marriage date: 25 Jan 1818
marriage place: Cathedral,Manchester,Lancashire,England

indexing project (batch) number: M00546-5
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 438190, 438191

..............that would fit with the 1854 marriage so may be ??????

Jill

Jill Report 26 Jul 2012 10:13

And there's a name change from conley to connelly but it reverts back to conley. I'd heard that the priest was irish and had to change the spelling when they ran off together. Unless she's run off at this point with someone else???

Jill

Jill Report 26 Jul 2012 10:16

Would the cathedral have a record of it? So it's looking like phillis shaw and joseph then. And make her 22 when got married.

Catherine

Catherine Report 26 Jul 2012 10:27

marriage certificates can be bought directly from the local registry office, or can be bought from the GRO (general registry office) and can be bought on line. They cost about £9 (or something like that). You can buy from other sites but they will cost a lot more.

Susannah looks to have died in 1865.

Address on 1841 census is Hanover Street.
Don't forget that the 1841 is only a possible siting so would need to be confirmed,(some how).

Catherine

Catherine Report 26 Jul 2012 10:32

Names were registered by clerks and were often misspelt as they usually wrote down what they heard. If the person registring had an accent, then the clerk may not have been familiar with that particular accent, or the person may not have known the exact spelling of his own name, so you will find lots of vatiants of names when doing your research. Always keep an open mind!
