Russell Report 3 Aug 2012 19:40

Hi,

I need help to trace beyond 1905 for my Father's family, the Taylors of Edinburgh. My father's name is George (no middle name) and he was born 1931 in Edinburgh, died 1981, his father was also George (but he had a middle name of Ross I think). He was born in 1905 and was in the Army in the 1920s when he met his wife, Jean Macalpine. His father was Thomas Taylor, and hs mother was Catherine McRae. Thomas was born around 1866, but I have been unable to decisively go back further than this as there are two families in Edinburgh with similarly named children in the 1861 Census. I have assumed that Thomas' father is Hugh Taylor, Born 1836 in Haddington, and his mother is Catherine Henderson born 1837. I have looked at the GRO(S) records but cannot decipher the registrar's handwriting to come to a definitive decision. If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Why Lailvro when their name is Taylor?

AnnCardiff

as it was often the practice back then to name the first son after the grandfather - could this be Hugh's father?

Alviegal,

The Pleasance address was the one that fitted as it had Thomas in the family and this is the one I have been using to go further back but without much success. I have Hugh as coming from Haddington and working as a Miller there but the Maltman was a common job as Edinburgh has lost of breweries! If I work on the assumption that the Pleasance address is correct what would you advise about going further back?

Russell,
When you say that you looked at the GROs, did you mean the marriage cert for Thomas Taylor and Catherine McRae?
This couple married In St George Parish, Edinburgh in 1896.
Therefore it is unlikely to find this couple together on any census prior to 1901

If you don't already have it, you do need to obtain this certificate to determine if you have identified the correct parents for Thomas.
Both sets of parents will be listed on it, and will confirm if any was deceased at this time. It will also confirm if either bride or groom had been married previously.

You say that Thomas was born circa 1866 which made him 30 yrs old at the time of this marriage

All of the children on this return were born after 1896:
1901 Scotland Census

Anne
Edit:
I also searched on Scotlands People for the 1911 census (Without Purchase) and found this family living in St Giles, Edinburgh.
In addition to the children listed on the 1901 return, there is also:
Thomas age6, John age 5 ( needs to be clarified that 5 is the correct age) Hugh age 4, Catherine age 3 and Mary Taylor age 31.

Cynthia / Anne,

Brilliant stuff - thanks again! When I say the GRO(S) I do mean the birth, marriage and death records, which I am trung to acquire for each person in my tree (albeit slowly!). It is these that I have found difficult to decipher on occasion and Thomas' death certificate was one of those records that confused me a little as I could not make out his parents details properly.

Your McRae information is valuable as I have not researched this branch at all but see that the family are closer than I thought - families being more extended in those times and more members living together - mostly due to privation of course.

Have searched trees on numerous occasions but will try again :-)
