I'm sure this is the banns for Ellen Betts & John Power's marriage - not sure why it's in Bradford?

West Yorkshire, England, Marriages and Banns, 1813-1935
Name: John Power - a bachelor
Birth Year: abt 1888
Age: 26
Marriage or Bann Date: 4 Feb 1914
Parish: Bradford, St Peter
Father's Name: James Power - Railway Signalman

Spouse's Father's Name: Thomas Betts - Groom and Coachman

John was an Army Sergeant in the 1st Battalion West Yorks regt. Stationed at Whittington Barracks, Lichfield.

Ellen lived 20 Margate Road (no town given)

Wonder if John was originally from Bradford?

POWER, John Single ? 24 1887 Keighley Yorks

MarieCeleste Report 20 Aug 2012 11:37

So, John was from West Yorks which explains why there would have been marriage banns there. When he was stationed in Staffs that must be how he met Ellen.

Given the above baptism, I think this will more likely be Ellen's birth rather than the 1897 posted on page 1:

Have sent a pm to Lynne in case she wasn't expecting any further info after marking the thread as answered.

There are a few trees on Ancestry (appear copied off each other) who have Arthur Salt as Michael Salt born 1900. No back up to this.

Lynne - can you get any inkling at all about when Arthur may have died?

Amazing what you find if you use Google! Everything you wanted to know about the Betts in Staffs - http://bettsfamstaffs.com/d1.htm

The part about John Power's death being before 1934 is incorrect as I've put his death details earlier.

HI, Sorry I didn't realise what I'd done! Thanks for telling me as I would have missed a lot of info.
I don't know why but I have a feeling Arthur died in the 1950's but it is only a feeling.
I also know there was a Michael and something to do with him being a rogue and spending time in prison, I think for petty crimes but again I'm not sure. I'm wondering if Michael was Arthurs brother? (If Arthur had any brothers of course!)
Lynne

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 20 Aug 2012 15:16

Lynne - I think Michael and Arthur were one and the same person! I've seen some posts on another site where a lady said she was Ellen's grandaughter and had been asking about Arthur Salt also known as "Mick".

Two possible deaths for Arthur:

Deaths Jun 1948
Salt Arthur 57 Sutton Coldf'd 9c 810

Deaths Dec 1948

EDIT: Given the info Lynne has later given that Arthur was alive in the 1950s these deaths are unlikely.

Wow! thanks for all of the above, I know Arthur and Ellens daughters names were Florence Ada and Barbara Mary - both middle names after family members perhaps? Florence is still living, as far as I am aware Arthur didn't remarry. Florence married in 1952 and Barbara in 1949. Arthur was alive in August 1949 and working as a stoker.

MarieCeleste Report 20 Aug 2012 21:24

Hi Lynne - just because Arthur wasn't noted as deceased on Barbara's marriage certificate doesn't necessarily mean he was still alive - it depends how the registrar asked.

Florence and Barbara apparently had two younger sisters (I didn't post their details as they may still be living)
