Merchant Navy records are easier to obtain. Surviving records are at the National Archives for those who served up to 1972 and are name searchable in their online Catalogue.

I have the following address where old Royal Navy records are kept. If you ring
01283 227 913
the guy on the other end of the phone is extremely helpful. He was able to tell me whether they had my father's records stored (1936-1946) - and they did.

Royal Navy
Navy Command
Director Naval Personnel
Navy Search
TNT Records Management
PO Box 7814
Tetron Point
William Nadin Way
Swadlincote
Derbyshire DE11 1EG.

They store old (forces) records and he'll send you a third party/next of kin form to request the RN data. There is a charge if you're not the widow/er or civil partner but this is only payable when you complete the form and send it in - so ask the guy first if the records you are after are stored there.

Hope you're successful.
