Cheryl, the GRO indices for her second and third marriages show her marrying in her previous married name - no mention of clark whatsoever. i.e. Rosina Donald when marrying Albert and Rosina Hill when marrying Richard.

You really need to get one or both of these certificates which are posted earlier and see what she gives her father's name as.

MY guess is that her father was Thomas Smith and, if the birth date on the death notice was correct, she was born the day before the 1891 census. But I can't find her in 1891 or 1901. And then I am guessing at some point her father died and her mother remarried Mr Clark so she was known as Clark which is why she uses it on the biorth certificates

Rose's birth date is def 2nd April but have no def record of the year.

I was thinking along the same lines re- there possibly being a second marriage from CLARK to SMITH. I haven't been able to find a Smith family in Ely on census at all. I have found a Clark family in 1901 - head of house a Sidney and there is a Rose in the house aged 10...still not sure how that ties in though

Found a tree on the gene's reunited site that linked in with my Rosina Hill, so have managed to add several family members to my tree.

Still confused re- ancestery of Richard Morgan, so have followed one of the suggestions - which was to order his marriage cert. Can't wait to see if Rosina is a CLARK or a SMITH on this cert!

Still no joy finding any info on Mary Jane Donald (she was Rosina's sister-in-law and sister to John Thomas Donald.

The last info I have on her is a baptism record for her son Elias John Edward Donald in Twynyrodyn. Elias ends up living with his grandparents John and Margaret Donald (Marieceleste found the 1911 census for that). He also appears on the 1901 census but his mother (Mary Jane) is not on either census. Family rumours are that she married. I found a marriage for a Mary Jane to an Arthur Hill in 1901 but that Mary J was from Scotland. It seems as though my Mary Jane Donald just disappeared! If anyone has any search tips or any info concerning Mary Jane I would be really grateful.

Thank you for all the help so far-amazing

So the John Thomas in 1881 census died in December 1881 and the John Thomas who married your grandmother was their second child named John Thomas

Cheryl

The births....this is "Norman"

Births Sep 1916 (>99%)
Hill Albert N H Donald Cardiff 11a 608 - no mention of Clark or Smith!

The fact that she uses Donald as her maiden name perhaps shows she didn't quite understand what information was needed!

I think you should ignore the Clark thing altogether, although it would be nice to find out why/where. I think the witness at her marriage to John Thomas I Clark might have been something to do with it - maybe her mother?

So I would concentrate on trying to trace Thomas though as it is so common and you don't know his wife's name :-(

Hi, I am curious about the similair names you have in your post.
My ancestors were named Donald and Hill on my grandfathers side.
My g-grandfather was named Arthur R Hill born after the 1911 census in September... I believe he had a sister named Lilian who partnered a black man and then moved to grangetown. They had a son born in the 1930s... If this comes to any recollection please contact me!!
