Im a little stuck trying to trace John Sayer(s) and his family

I have found him in 1891 but before that im not having much luck

I have ordered the marriage certificate for the marriage of John Sayer to Elizabeth Ann Smith and in 1886 John was living at 6 Willway Street in Bristol. I have his birth as around 1862 in the Bristol area (one census does say Southampton but I think this is a typo). His father name is also John and they were both General Labourers.

Apart from this, I can find no trace of John before 1891

Can anyone help at all????

We need to check what information is available to try to find the missing censuses.
How do you know his father is John?

Its on the marriage certificate I ordered for John Sayer and Elizabeth

No I cant seem to find a birth that quite matches dates and place!!!! :-S

Please wil you tell us the names of the witnesses at the marriage of John to Elizabeth Ann.?
They might help find the family...

If your only clue to his father is from the marriage certificate ................


....... don't forget that many people told porkies when getting married.


If they were illegitimate, or gather had died or left when they were very young ........ they would give "a" name on the certificate .............. it looks better for the in-laws!



The name could be made-up, it could be the name of a grandfather, or other male relative, a well-known figure in the town or area, etc etc

.......... although, to be fair, Charlotte did say above that she had the 1901 and 1911 censuses, it was pre-1891 information that she wanted. :-D

Going back to this thread again I have tried a few different options but still nothing but I have just found one of johns daughters eliza may, her full name was Eliza May Hollier Sayers!!
This is quite an unusual middle name do you think it could be of some significance?

sorry to post again but I have just found a John Mayers in the 1881 census born bristol and the correct age could this possibly a spelling mistake and be a Sayers??????
