Only from the censuses Charlotte. George and Caroline were living there in 1881 and 1891, so I've assumed they must also have been there in 1886 when John got married.

Hi Christina

I was wondering where you got the information from to see who he was living with in 1886?

Thanks

Charlotte

ChristinaS Report 22 Sep 2012 11:34

The people John was living with at 6, Willway Street (when he got married) were George and Caroline Hellyar (sometimes spelled Hillyar - but not Hollier).

This one????

1881 Census

Name: John Mayers
Age: 19
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Relation: Lodger

Where born: Bristol, Gloucestershire, England

Civil parish: Swindon
County/Island: Wiltshire

I looked at the image on ancestry, and it is very clearly Mayers

This also appears to be the same guy in 1901 ..............

1901 Census

Name: John Mayers
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Catherine Mayers
Gender: Male
Where born: Bristol

Registration district: Poplar
Sub-registration district: Poplar

John Mayers 40 Boiler Maker
Catherine Mayers 36
Elsie Mayers 6
John Mayers 4
May Legging 8

Again, it is clearly Mayers on the image.

Having said that, these are the only 2 censuses where John Mayers appears

????? This could be his birth registration ...............

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 about John Mayers

This is quite an unusual middle name do you think it could be of some significance?

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Sep 2012 00:27

because Charlotte started another thread, and no-one realised that the work had already been done

.......... although, to be fair, Charlotte did say above that she had the 1901 and 1911 censuses, it was pre-1891 information that she wanted. :-D

Why are we repeating information that has already been given, when we are just trying to work out what is going on?

If your only clue to his father is from the marriage certificate ................

....... don't forget that many people told porkies when getting married.

If they were illegitimate, or gather had died or left when they were very young ........ they would give "a" name on the certificate .............. it looks better for the in-laws!

The name could be made-up, it could be the name of a grandfather, or other male relative, a well-known figure in the town or area, etc etc
