ChristinaS Report 22 Sep 2012 17:02

Only from the censuses Charlotte. George and Caroline were living there in 1881 and 1891, so I've assumed they must also have been there in 1886 when John got married.

Charlotte Report 22 Sep 2012 12:23

Hi Christina

I was wondering where you got the information from to see who he was living with in 1886?

ChristinaS Report 22 Sep 2012 11:34

The people John was living with at 6, Willway Street (when he got married) were George and Caroline Hellyar (sometimes spelled Hillyar - but not Hollier).

ChristinaS Report 22 Sep 2012 09:42

This isn't your John, but I wondered if there was a family connection.

This one????

1881 Census

Name: John Mayers
Age: 19
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Relation: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Bristol, Gloucestershire, England

Civil parish: Swindon
County/Island: Wiltshire
Country: England

Street Address: 6 Linslade St

Occupation: Carpenters Labourer

Registration district: Highworth
Sub-registration district: Swindon

William Perry 49
Caroline Perry 55
William Scott 24
John Mayers 19
William B. Palmer 12
Walter Palmer 6

I looked at the image on ancestry, and it is very clearly Mayers

This also appears to be the same guy in 1901 ..............

1901 Census

Name: John Mayers
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Catherine Mayers
Gender: Male
Where born: Bristol

County/Island: London
Country: England

Registration district: Poplar
Sub-registration district: Poplar

John Mayers 40 Boiler Maker
Catherine Mayers 36
Elsie Mayers 6
John Mayers 4
May Legging 8

Again, it is clearly Mayers on the image.

Having said that, these are the only 2 censuses where John Mayers appears

????? This could be his birth registration ...............

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 about John Mayers

Charlotte Report 21 Sep 2012 21:21

sorry to post again but I have just found a John Mayers in the 1881 census born bristol and the correct age could this possibly a spelling mistake and be a Sayers??????

Charlotte Report 21 Sep 2012 16:02

Going back to this thread again I have tried a few different options but still nothing but I have just found one of johns daughters eliza may, her full name was Eliza May Hollier Sayers!!
This is quite an unusual middle name do you think it could be of some significance?

Charlotte Report 11 Sep 2012 08:26

Sorry everyone for the confusion

Yes its only pre 1891 im really interested in and trying to trace Johns Birth and his family

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Sep 2012 00:27

because Charlotte started another thread, and no-one realised that the work had already been done

.......... although, to be fair, Charlotte did say above that she had the 1901 and 1911 censuses, it was pre-1891 information that she wanted. :-D

patchem Report 10 Sep 2012 22:31

Why are we repeating information that has already been given, when we are just trying to work out what is going on?

(Not clear which children are definitely alive and living with them, as some crossed out, claims 5 living, 3 died)
Shirhampton is Clifton, Bristol.

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Sep 2012 22:19

If your only clue to his father is from the marriage certificate ................

....... don't forget that many people told porkies when getting married.

If they were illegitimate, or gather had died or left when they were very young ........ they would give "a" name on the certificate .............. it looks better for the in-laws!

The name could be made-up, it could be the name of a grandfather, or other male relative, a well-known figure in the town or area, etc etc

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Sep 2012 22:16

How does this birth registration fit????

Gwyn in Kent Report 10 Sep 2012 22:09

Charlotte Report 10 Sep 2012 21:38

No I cant seem to find a birth that quite matches dates and place!!!! :-S

patchem Report 10 Sep 2012 21:28

Have you found a possible birth for him in free bmd?

Charlotte Report 10 Sep 2012 21:21

Its on the marriage certificate I ordered for John Sayer and Elizabeth

patchem Report 10 Sep 2012 21:18

We need to check what information is available to try to find the missing censuses.
How do you know his father is John?

Charlotte Report 10 Sep 2012 21:15

Thanks for this

I have them in the 1901 and 1911 census but it was mainly before 1891 I was struggling with
