Finding a Marriage

Sarah Report 13 Oct 2012 17:25

Now I have the details for the children of Ann and the marriage records, I am trying to find information on her three husbands.

Husband 1 - George Samuel Ward 1837 - 1868 Died India - trying to find his birth record

Husband 2 - William Booth Brindle 1837 - 1870 Died India - trying to find his birth record

Husband 3 - John Dickens Knight 1844 - 1914 - I have his birth/death info

Also, when they all returned to England, most children of Ann's had either died or they returned to England with her. The only one which is still unaccounted for is George Henry Ward born 1865 India - cannot find him in England on census returns or a death record in India for him.

Also, does anyone know how to get information on men serving in the Army in India?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Ancestry has the marriage certificate on their for that one - father listed as Thomas so it's definitely her. it also lists Francis Lewis as a witness which was her grandfather! Mystery solved - thanks for all your help! Now I can go search for extra information on them all. Never had any one born/lived/buried in India before!

Wow - that's great Christina - Ann Mortimer's father was Thomas Mortimer so that looks like her! So presumably Ann Mortimer married an Unknown Brindle before marrying John Knight. I will go check for that marriage now!

Yes that is the one I'm thinking it might be. She appears on the 1841 and 1851 census living with her parents. She has an illigitimate child in Mildenhall in 1857 but then disappears. I haven't found a burial or death record for her in Mildenhall. The illigitimate child lived with Ann's parents. Now it's possible she just died but she may well have got married too.

I have located a possible ancestor on a census return but I need to find a marriage record for her to confirm if she is related or not. 1881 census as follows:

1881 England Census about Ann Knight
Name: Ann Knight
Age: 44
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1837
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: John Knight
Gender: Female
Where born: Underhall, Wiltshire, England <<<< SHOULD SAY MILDENHALL, WILTSHIRE
Civil parish: Antony
County/Island: Cornwall
Country: England
Street Address: Tregantle Fort
Condition as to marriage: Married
Occupation: Gunners Wife
Registration district: St Germans
Sub-registration district: Antony
ED, institution, or vessel: 10
Piece: 2280
Folio: 80
Page Number: 2
Household Members:
John Knight 36
Ann Knight 44
Walter E. Knight 8
John F. C. Knight 3

Now I have worked out that John Knight was in fact John Dickens Knight. He was a Gunner and their two children were born in India. I have located the family in 1891 in Oxfordshire and then Ann dies in Bradfield Reg District in 1897 then John remarries Jane Ellen Baughan the following year. He appears in 1901 and 1911 with his second wife. The two sons die in Bradfield reg district.

I'm trying to find out what Ann''s maiden name was but so far cannot locate a marriage. I'm hoping her maiden name is Mortimer! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
