railway staff records, 1800s

How can I find out which railway company my ancestor worked for? Lived in St Pancras, London ..... I'd to find records, and maybe photos.
He was a railway policema - although i undertstand this term was not necessarily 'enforcer of law'.

Hi Andy,

Apologies for the delayed response. I don't have a subscription to Ancestory.co.uk so if you are able to find anything out I would be truly grateful.

My ancestor is GEORGE PRIER born 1814

1851 census - approx 37 yrs, living in St Pancras, RAILWAY POLICEMAN

1870 son's wedding cert - RAILWAY POINTSMAN

1871 census - living in Euston Street, Pancras, SIGNALMAN & POINTSMAN

You could try the following books via your local library: "St Pancras Station" by Jack Simmons and by the same author "The Railway in England and Wales 1830 - 1914". or "The Railway in Town and Country 1830-1940".

Probably the National Railway museum at York would be the best source as they would know which railways operated at the dates you state. There were many takeovers at that time. I understand there are a lot of documents available.

Searching on Google to looks as if St. Pancras was opened by the Midland Railway so that might be who he worked for.

Just had a quick look on Ancestry under
UK Railway Employment records 1833-1963.
George Prier(looks to me like Price)You may like to check this yourself at your local library it is free to acces Ancestry.
In reg1875-1878( records for men left discharged or transfered).
Company London North Western
May 4 1876
Number 6673
Trade Officer
5/-
Transfered to Mr Hasdden (again hard to read)
Service written over two column 1008
I take this to mean 10years 8 months.
i looked in the card index and in left hand column I just put railway.
These records are from those at the London Archives.

OH, who is a railway historian (although not for this company) confirms that he would have worked for the Midland Railway
