Regarding the place of birth as Glasgow, rather than Old Monkland, my understanding is that Old Monkland and other places in what is now Lanarkshire were, depending on the source, often classified as part of what was in those days within the area covered by Glasgow.

I will be 69 this year and as I have no immediate family I am trying to create a history of the family as accurately as possible for my nieces and nephews, to that end I will avoid anything that cannot be verified.

I can see that you are frustrated looking for info on a George Wotherspoon b 1700 but that is a jump of almost a century on your last known definitive Wotherspoon ancestor, Thomas Wotherspoon bc 1792 who married Agnes Naismith.

This Wotherspoon research is driving me absolutely crazy, my doctors say avoid stress, they must be joking.

I have been searching various sites including Scotlands People to try and tie down information on a George Wotherspoon's birth abt 1700, Of Craighead, Old Moncklands, Lanark, Scotland, and also who his wife and children were. So far I have not really found out anything definitive on George Wotherpoon.

What I have found is that there were the 9 Wotherspoon's listed below who were born to four fathers between 1700 and 1705 in Old Moncklands/Coatbridge area of Lanark, and this raises the question as to whether these four fathers were related and also the question as to whether any of them have the additional name of George.

I don't really sure how you have arrived at researching the Wotherspoon family prior to Thomas Wotherspoon and Agnes Naismith.
I cannot see a birth for their son George bc 1819 but I am assuming that you have a death record that confirms he was the son of Thomas and Agnes Naismith

These are the births from family search.
SP has 5 children, 1 male and 4 females. I am certain that one of them is a female infant death ,taken from the mortcloth section as there is no name for the child.

Assuming Thomas' father was indeed called George, could he too be younger than your guess?
Also note that on 1851 return Thomas's place of birth is Glasgow, rather than Old Monkland and Agnes was from Cumbernauld.

I have searched every where on Scotland People and have two George Wotherspoons both born 1759, I have cataracts so my eyesight is not that good, but from what I can decipher, one is from the OPR Births and it shows Robert as the father, the other is from the SRI Births and it shows Alexander as the father, very strange :-(

I don't see where you get the "servant" idea from. Robert 1729 was 30 when this George was born. An earlier marriage seems in order so i'd look for that on SP.

His later children were born of the second (?) marriage to Christian McLearan (McLaren possibly?)

Having another senior moment here, It appears that George Wotherspoon born abt 1700 had four children, Robert b1729, Margaret b1726, Christian b1732, and George b1735.

That said, I have Robert Wotherspoon b1729 marrying Christian McLearan about 1775 in Wanflit, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and that they had three children who were, Jean b1776, Robert b1778, and Marion b1783.

What is puzzling me is that Robert born 1729 appears to have had another son called George born in 1759, so who was his mother?

I have looked on Scotlands people but cannot find the mother, and weird as it may seem I am wondering if it is possible that his mother was a servant or one of his fathers sisters?

Looks like the George Wotherspoon b1729 was the son of John Wotherspoon who may well have been the brother of the George Wotherspoon b1700.

My thoughts are that George Wotherspoon b1700 was married twice and had a child by each of his wives these children being Margaret b1726 and Robert b1734.

This is the scenario that I am looking at as I try to find out who his wife or wives were. :-(

I don't think that I am the only one trying to find information on a George Wotherspoon born c1700 in Craighead, Lanarkshire, in Scotland.

His wife's name is not known, she is also believed to have been born in Scotland around 1716.

I have looked everywhere on Scotlands People and on other sites but the furthest I have got back to is a possible son Robert Wotherspoon born c1734 in the Old Monkland area of Lanarkshire.

I think it will take more that a sledge hammer to crack this one :-(
