My daughter's 36 and she wouldn't thank me for calling her middle aged!!

My unintentional help on your other thread is noted :-D

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 17 Aug 2014 10:44

No Choccy....my elder daughter is 30 :-) And I certainly wouldn't have appreciated being called middle-aged at 36! (It's bad enough that now I am 56 I actually am........)

Yes as Flip says on the other thread - what a coincidence!

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 17 Aug 2014 18:50

In 1911 Elvira (mother) Edmunds states 11 children 9 living and 2 died.....so I have 11, I know which two died and Eva wasn't one of them.

So where on earth is she in 1911?

I am going to try and have a couple of hours in the library soon to check on electoral rolls...especially to see if I can find Charles before he moved in with Maria in 1920 at 36 Constance Street.

Am going to re-title the thread after this post to see if anyone lives local to Bridgwater....

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 17 Aug 2014 18:53

Does anyone live near enough to look at the electoral registers for 45 Wellington Road Bridgwater in 1926?

Pre 1974 ERs are held in full (except Bath) at the Taunton records centre according to this.

http://www1.somerset.gov.uk/archives/Leaflets/ElectoralRegisters.pdf

You could try phoning them (01823 278805) or e-mailing.

I can't find Eva Edmunds or Bevan in 1911 sorry.

Flip Report 18 Aug 2014 08:51

I think Chris is right, I looked at that marriage, but couldn't find them in 1911 for any confirmation. But the newspaper announcement would confirm it!

Think John Kerry Gilbert ended up in US, I'll try to find him again. I discounted this because I couldn't find them in 1911, but I think Eva died in 1913 Newport.

Flip

Flip Report 18 Aug 2014 09:01

US Draft card:

John Kerry Gilbert
County:San Bernardino
State:California
Birth Date:9 Feb 1886
Race:White
Draft Board:1

He looks to have gone first in 1909.

Flip

Flip Report 18 Aug 2014 09:06

I know you're not looking for him, so won't post - but he's re-married and on 1920 census with Vera I Gilbert in San Bernardino - she was named as Verna Irene on his us draft card. First arrive in US in 1909.

So Jude, I think back to the drawing board with Eva Bevan - looks like they are 2 different people, so we have no idea of her age.

ADDED: If we know she was living with Maria/Charles in 1922 you have checked the ERs, so that would indicate she was under 30 I think. She must have been "of age" to get probate in 1926 (otherwise it would have been a joint probate with another) - so does that narrow her birth to c1892-1905?

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 18 Aug 2014 18:22

All - thanks.....oh well poor old Eva!

Eva Bevan does not show on the electoral rolls that I have checked. But women were not given the vote until 1928 unless they owned the property or were university graduates and I'll bet she was neither!

So if she appears on an electoral roll before 1928, then it will be because she inherited 45 Wellington Road in 1926.

Going back to Eva Bevan of Clytha Park Road - it says she was born in Monmouth

so there's this one...

Name: Eva Bevan
Registration Year: 1880
Registration Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep
Registration district: Monmouth
Parishes for this Registration District: View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District
Inferred County: Monmouthshire
Volume: 11a
Page: 35

But I can't find her in 1911......

Aaaghhh.....so frustrating! I'll come back when I have managed to get to the library! And will try emailing Taunton in the meantime

Jude

Or, did women get the vote when they were 30 (from 1918) - I have this in the back of my memory banks somewhere!

I looked at likely candidates for Eva Bevan in the time frame I suggested - there is 1 born 1893 Hampstead, 1 in 1899 Shardlow (I think they both married in area) and 2 in Bedwelty - 1898/1900.

Flip Report 18 Aug 2014 18:38

I think I found the 1880 (Monmouth) Eva getting married, but need to try to find her again

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 18 Aug 2014 18:50

The Somerset link you posted explains it all!

Before 1918 women were not allowed to vote at parliamentary elections. Until the 19th century voting rights were based on amounts and type of land/property people held. Before 1832 constituencies were unequal, and electoral qualifications varied. In counties men aged 21-70 with freehold property worth at least forty shillings a year could vote at local and parliamentary elections and were eligible for jury service. Borough qualifications varied depending on terms
in their Charter of Incorporation and local customs. This meant that some areas were completely unrepresented, while ancient boroughs could return two MPs, even ones that had diminished in size and importance (these were known as ‘rotten boroughs’). The franchise was gradually extended by the following Acts:

Representation of the People Acts
• 1918: Vote given to all men over 21 and to women over 30 who were ratepayers or wives of ratepayers;
• 1928: Vote given to all women over the age of 21;
• 1969: Minimum voting age for men and women lowered to 18.

So only women over 30 who were ratepayers or wives of ratepayers (and I think graduates) could vote before 1928.

Yes I think I can find her in 1881 and 1891 and then lose her.....

We came full circle with Eva - I Knew I remembered her - posted her likely marriage on page 5 - but couldn't find her in 1911 then either!

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 19 Aug 2014 06:54

Yes Flip I knew you had but, without actually buying the certificate, we needed to find her in 1911 and couldn't... I wonder what happened? After a grand wedding he seems to have left his bride rather quickly!

Have emailed Somerset Archives

A tree on ancestry has a son born to them in 1908 - Trevor Edmunds Gilbert, so maybe she stayed behind while he went ahead to sort out a new life for them?

ADDED: 2 year old Trevor and Eva arrived in New York 12/5/1910 on the Caronia, she named her contact in UK as mother Elvira Edmunds - was going to join husband John in San Bernadino, California. So this is probably why we cant find her in 1911. When John died in 1966 his record shows 2 children, Trevor & Muriel (she was born to Verna)

Flip, Chris thanks. Even though these are not now anything to do with my family, it's good to know what happened. It's also indicative of why we should resurrect old threads occasionally as more records are released.

The Ship and Pilot's still there!

Flip Report 20 Aug 2014 18:49

Well, I guess we finally eliminated Eva Edmunds from the search, so hopefully the records office won't take as long to reply as the will took to arrive ;-)

Let us know if (and when) you get something..........in the meantime, I went back to that 1911 census for Charles David Llewellyn and looked at image 1 of the set (on ancestry) to see the area coverage. Flipped to the next page and there was a Harry (well I think it was Harry, but transcribed Henry) Bevan who was in the licenced trade (beer retailer).......wonder if he had a sister/cousin Eva....although not knowing Newport I've no idea how close his address of Church road is to your guys.

Just another thought to keep you occupied while you wait for the RO to get back to you :-D
