My great grandfather, Philip Thomas Serjeant, emigrated from Australia about 1903.
He was living in Ballarat, Australia prior to this time. He emigrated together with his wife, Lilias and five children to South Africa. I have found in the Archives of the State Government of Australia reference to his brother's departure from Melbourne in the year 1901, also to South Africa, but no reference of Philip and his family. It could be that he did not sail from Melbourne but perhaps from elsewhere. can anyone help with this?

Ballarat has an excellent genealogical society. It might be worth contacting them to see if they have any records that might assist you in your quest for information.

Good luck.
