having had a break from geneology for a few years i have been bitten by the bug again after an enquiry into a member from our family tree. my great grandfather is a bit of a mystery, as he dissapears after the 1891 census, and his wife declares herself a widow on the 1901 census, but family members believe he moved, on possibly emigrating. i have copies of his birth and marriage certificates, his details are as follows:- born george thomas badger in dec 1853 in west bromwich to parents george badger & bridget badger (cooper). he married eliza savage in aston birmingham in april 1874. by 1891 they have moved to london and are living in reigate with 11 children, this is the last information we have on george and his son norman. we have been unable to trace any death certificates for either of them. if anyone has any information i would be most grateful. my father (75) and his sister (89) would love to know what became of their grandfather. many thanks mick & marie badger.

thanks everybody for your input. andrew i don,t think the george you have found is my one as he is still alive in 1891 as is listed in census. vera the marriage you mentioned is correct as i have the marriage certificate, he does indeed marry eliza savage, bridget cooper was his mother.. joseph he could have been adopted, but none of the other children were adopted, is there an adoption register? as for a misprint i have looked at the original census document, but it is a little difficult to be 100% sure ,but nothing matches on the birth records? confusing.. mel thanks for having a look.

did you REALLY look at that probate that Andrew found???
death ON OR SINCE Jan 1890
ie, they didn't know when he actually died!
That smells to me of someone having him declared dead, and thus his will being submitted for probate. OR of money being found in a bank and the claim made by the Trustee.
This is the actual entry ............. you'll have to buy the will to see how the money was left.
Badger, George Thomas of Winterbourne Road, Thornton Heath, Croydon, Surrey, died on or since January 1890 in Canada. Administration [granted] London 19 April 1916 to the Public Trustee Effects £978

thanks for that sylvia, will send for a copy of the will and see if the trustee links with the family, i assume with living children it would have to be one of them as the wife died 1908. what is a public trustee? mick & marie badger

Since the Canadian census 1901 gives the exact dob, and the 1911 gives month & year, I thought I would look up Geo's birth in the GRO index. Can search at http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/index.jsp or use the year switch at top right for 1901.
Births Jun 1853 (>99%) Badger George Thomas W Bromwich 6b 365 [image says page=568 - correct'n subm'd to FreeBMD] Clicking on the "W Bromwich" link, then the more info "here" link gets: WEST BROMWICH REGISTRATION DISTRICT Sub-districts : Handsworth, Oldbury, Wednesbury, West Bromwich First, West Bromwich North East, etc.
But there's an oddity - this was a late rego as he was actually born in 1852 Using http://www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk/ West Midlands Birth indexes for the years: 1852 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference BADGER George T West Bromwich North East Sandwell Register Office WBNE/20/48

thanks mgnv, i have a copy of his birrth certificate and he was born on 8/12/1852 and was registered on 7/06/1853 by his father also called george. what i don't have is any firm connection with canada other than a trustee listing his death at sometime btween 1890-1916 in canada, any info would be most welcome. mick.

Since many Brits were attracted by the free homestead land in Canada, I checked the Western Land Grants and got a hit: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/western-land-grants/001007-100.01-e.php Part Section Township Range Meridian SE 25 31 3 W4 Reference: Volume: 866 Folio: 280 Microfilm reel number: C-6632 Names: George Badger
This quarter section (i.e., 160 acres) was a couple of miles WSW of Esther AB, 13 miles from the AB-SK border: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/post-offices/index-e.html Esther Sec. 32, Twp. 31, R. 2, W4M - 1914-06-01
However, when I checked on when the letters patent (i.e., title) were granted via the search help, I get: LIBER DATES REEL NUMBER 866 May 28, 1920 - June 09, 1920 C-6631-C-6632 so it's unlikely this George is yours.
