Aspen Report 19 Oct 2012 10:51

I am looking for Alexander Spence from Raphoe Donegal Ireland who emigrated after 1901. He was on the Donegal census then. I have been told that he had a sheep station in Australia but where in Australia is not known. I know he was born 24/09/1856 but I know from the census and his army records he must have thought he was born 1860. His parents were called Alexander and Mary Jane (nee Hamilton) Another interesting item, when he died his money came back to Ireland to his nephew. No dates for that either. Alexander was not married in 1901 I am looking forward to any information as I have been unable to get anything after 1901. I have checked Wills here in Dublin and Belfast but nothing there. :-S
Kind regards
Alison

hello Alison

you have probably searched Trove but I will post anyway

I put in "Alexander Spence"

you can then narrow this down by decade

Lizzie was married to Alexander's brother William. William was in Scotland working!
Lizzie was living in Townparks in 1911 and lived there until she died 1938.

GINS
No that is not my tree but it is connected as Alexander had a sister Ellen and that is who is doing it. I have been in contact with 2 others doing the same tree. I think the tree you mentioned had Alexander married. Also they have some dates wrong!
I went to the Church and got the records and Alexander only had one name as they all did, only Mary Jane who was called after her mother.
Alexander was a labourer and he had been in the army and was in India. I had been told that he left money but the person was in his 80's ( Alexander was his Gt Uncle too) and was not sure of dates. But i do know that another member of the family, not Spence, went to New Zealand and maybe he got mixed up! The other person was on his grandmother's side.Sadly the person is no longer with us.
I have been looking in Trove, never knew about it before, and wondered about a death 28th. August 1933 ALEXANDER SPENCE 2 Andrew street Balmain but it states Elizabeth Leishman as his wife!
As I have my tree nearly finished I need to find this Alexander Spence.
Fingers Crossed!
Alison ;-)

GINS
I sent for that cert 1927 to find he was from Scotland.
I have looked at passenger lists and have not found any to say Irish yet. Some have Scotch or English. Steerage don't give where they are from.
I am hoping to be able to get his death cert as it should say he was from Ireland and his parents names!
regards
Alison

I checked over my information for Alex Spence arriaval 9th Jan 1909. I have it leaving the UK in 1908 and it states Alex Spence as English. I think if it was him it would have him as Irish!! I have been struggling with this for some time but I won't give up as he is now the only member of my tree I cannot find.

I have been looking in Trove, never knew about it before, and wondered about a death 28th. August 1933 ALEXANDER SPENCE 2 Andrew street Balmain but it states Elizabeth Leishman as his wife. It states that Leishman, Elizabeth wife and family are invited to attend the funeral of her beloved husband and their father Alexander Spence to leave 2 St Andrew Street Balmain this Wed at 1.30pm for Presbyterian Cemetery
I thought this was interesting.......could it be him? Why was her name not Spence?

Aspen,
If you look at the parish record for his birth, you may find information about his emigration, etc.
I found the marriage and death information for my husbands grandfather against his birth entry in the parish records. Born Donegal, married/died Scotland.

Good luck, Pam

P.S. A strong magnifying glass and a knowledge of latin was required. :-D

Pam
I have been to the Church and I can only find his date of birth and when baptised. Nothing else for him. I did find info for his siblings there. I have found his army records and found him in 1901 census, but nothing after that. :-(
