I cannot find out where he died, think he may have gone to New York but a strong family man suddenly disappears. He last appears on the 1891 Scottish Census but do not know further than that. 1911 his wife is described as a widow. This is driving me nuts. Happy to pass on info I have or other Bertie family members if I have it in my collection. |

Was his wife Sarah? If so, he wasn't with her on the 1891 but on the 1881 he was an unemployed joiner. |

It looks as Evelyn has a private tree on Ancestry. |

The age on this death is a bit out, but I wonder .... |

Oh my gosh what a response and the reference to 2 months in prison explains everything. That is the man and everything slots into place. He was a strong union man and then disappeared my grandfather never spoke of his father. His brother is the younger John Watson Bertie who was born in a factory building and then ended up on 'the Mars', which is a ship for delinquent boys (napoleonic man of war) and they were given a trade of carpentry. He then had a large family where most children died young only to go to war and be blown up in 1915 at the battle of Loos. How can I ever thank everyone for this information and a lot of it is new to me. My granda was Frederick Moir Bertie born 1885. |

This is what I felt but did not have the proof and did not have the information about the 2 months prison episode. I have a John w Bertie in the Manhattan census with a wife called Margaret. If he died in 1906 would be interesting to find out why aged 51. Is it easy to get death certificates from USA. |

Evelyn, I think I've come across the John Bertie in Manhattan, if it's the right one then he was born either Hungary or Yugoslavia, depending on which census he's on. Name also down as Bertic on some. |
