Thing is Mila, haven't actually found that marriage. It may have happened someplace else (perhaps where people didn't know they were related?)

Whilst marriage between cousins is legal (well, it is in England) many people frown on it and also fear that any children of the union may have a much increased risk of birth defects. I wonder if this has contributed to the family mystery?

Don't know anything about Australian residency but would have thought that as it was part of British colony then marriage wouldn't be necessary to stay there.

As previously suggested you need help from our Oz experts but you need to attract their attention. Go to page 1 of this thread and then to your very first post on that page. Click "edit" and you can then get back to your heading to amend it - add the word Australia to the end of the title.

Will still continue to look for anything useful.

Birth certificate was handwritten with no errors. Why on earth did he marry his cousin???Did you have to be married to an Australian Citizen to stay here back then?

Good one MC

I hadn't picked that up!

I've just realised - it seems that Ada Rawlins and Stanley Gittings would have been full cousins, their mothers were sisters.

This is the Ada M Rawson, I think:

Australia Birth Index, 1788-1922

so, I'm not the only one to get wild and woolly ideas!!

This, which I posted on p.1, is the only other reference to Stanley and Ada getting married that I found ......................

I'm searching for Arthur Rawson(b 1854) married to Ann Oldham (b 1853)family background in England before migranted to Australia in 1880's with their daughter, Lily- Lillie(b 1877). Lily dies in Melbourne 1887. I'm from Geelong, Victoria, Australia, have Rawson family starting Arthur and Ann in Australia. Their son Sydney married to Grace Elizabeth Smout, and their 12 childrens, also their daughter, Ada which I haven't done research on Ada married to Stanley Gittings in Melbourne. Cheers

Sylvia - I had been thinking most of the afternoon along those lines. Everything seems to point towards surrogacy.

Still can't find any marriage between Ada and Stanley

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Nov 2012 20:10

that just adds another layer!

you know, a wild and woolly theory has entered my head!

I am so puzzled as to why the mother's name should be entered as Rawson

There should have been no need to do that ................... the birth was in a different state from where Ada lived, so no-one would know if Stanley had had a child with someone else.

I wonder if it was an attempt for ADA and Stanley to have a child??

In other words .................... was he "using" Mona to have a child that she would then give up to Stanley, and he would take back to Victoria for Ada to raise???????

If Mona refused to then give up the child ..............................

I see, Sylvia! I never bother looking in One World Tree for results as most of the records in there are worse than submitted records on FamilySearch. They're usually a hodgepodge of mismatches.

I found the record in question and this is what it leads to:

ID: I4955
Name: Ada M. RAWSON
Sex: F
Birth: 1888 in VICTORIA
Death: WFT Est. 1930-1983
Fact 1: See Note Page
Note:
Facts about this person:

Record Change January 05, 1995

Father: Henry RAWSON b: 1862 in Melbourne, Vic
Mother: Henrietta HORROCKS b: 1861 in COUNTY DURHAM, ENGLAND

Marriage 1 Stanley GITTINGS b: WFT Est. 1873-1906
Married: 1926 in Victoria

This is attributed to three user submitted trees and the range of the birth and death dates shows the info isn't to be trusted.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Nov 2012 19:55

got it!

Not sure it is the same way I found it last night, but it's just worked for me now

I put Stanley Gittings, Marriage 1926 +/- 2

Australian records

OneWorldTree

Stanley Gittings
Spouse: Ada M Rawson
F: (Name Unknown)

M: (Name Unknown)
Marriage: 1926 - Victoria, Australia

Mila - you say the name Rawson was written on on your mum's birth certificate as the mother's surname but you don't know by who.

Do you mean that someone has handwritten something different across the original certificate? Or, is that the name that has been filled in by the register office on the cert?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 5 Nov 2012 19:11

This is rather odd, I think it's the same death as I posted above but also in her maiden name:

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985
Name: Ada Rawson
Death Place: Kew, Victoria
Age: 67
Father's Name: Willi Arthur
Mother's name: Ann Dedham
Registration Year: 1954
Registration Place: Victoria
Registration number: 2690
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1887

In both cases, I think the mother's maiden name may be a mis-transcription of Oldham.

Both death records tie in with this birth:

Australia Birth Index, 1788-1922
Name: Ada Rawson
Father's Name: Arthur William Rawson
Mother's name: Ann Oldham
Birth Place: Melbourne, Victoria
Registration Year: 1887
Registration Place: Victoria
Registration number: 5949

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 5 Nov 2012 14:17

This must be the 1954 death referred to:

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985
Name: Ada Gittings
Death Place: Kew, Victoria
Age: 67
Father's Name: Arthur Rawson
Mother's name: Ann Decham
Registration Year: 1954
Registration Place: Victoria
Registration number: 2690
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1887

which would be this lady on the ER, just before she died:

Australian Electoral Rolls, 1903-1980
Name: Ada Gittings
Gender: Female
Electoral Year: 1954
State: Victoria
District: Kooyong
Subdistrict: Kew

Living at 23 Barker's Road. No-one else eligible with same surname listed.

From 1931 to 1949 she lived 22 Elgin Street, Hawthorn, Kooyong

Sylvia - I have Australian access but I'm not finding that record that you posted above re: 1926 marriage.

Can you post a page link and I'll see if I can get to it that way.

Hi Mila - please don't start a new thread about people we're already working on, causes duplication and confusion!

Yes,someone wrote Rawson on my mothers birth certificate as my Grandmothers surname and we do not know who. After reading that Stanley was married at the time and that Ada was 20years older than him it is quite confusing.I have found that there is the name Oldham on Adas' side of the family and that there is Jane Gittings(Oldham) who is Stanleys mother. We dont know why it was written that way on the certificate and after her family staying tight lipped about her father she wanted to know something.Thankyou for all your help.
