Re John McFarlane:

Bradhurst Avenue is in Manhattan (per Google). 146 is at the intersection of Bradhurst Avenue and West 150th Street.

There are several John McFarlanes, born in Scotland, living in Manhattan in 1915 - 1940.

I don't see any actually on Bradhurst Avenue.

Duncan's death certificate will tell you if he was married.

While I would agree with ArgyllGran it looks that he may have been unmarried, remember that people didn't always marry in the area they lived. I found a marriage in the 1890s for an ancestor who lived in Falkirk same as his future wife but they married in Glasgow.

It doesn't look as if Duncan married (born 1882, not 1885).
There are 4 Duncan Mcdermid (or variation) marriages in Lanarkshire 1900-1910, but two have middle names, so we can discount them. And none of them is in Old Monkland. They're all in Glasgow city.

Yes, this is the right Christina - I've had a look at your Chrissie's birth cert, Brigid / Alisoun, and she was born 9th June 1907.

As far as I can see, the only 1924 record quoted on this thread for a Duncan
was the birth of a possible son of Andrew - not a death.

Duncan, son of Malcolm, and brother of Andrew, Chrissie, James, John, etc, died 1910.

If you buy credits on ScotlandsPeople you can view the image (and save and/or print it) of the original death record for young Duncan in 1910, which was posted earlier in this thread.

It will give you the cause of his death.

I suspect that it was James who paid for John's passage to America the clothlapper+bootmaker's salaries in Cambuslang probably wouldn't cover it and I don't suppose my grandad's navy wages would stretch to that .
Haven't found Jean Rose 1929 or james kyle Macdermid on members trees .

Mysteries which remain did Duncan ,malcolm +andrew have children before they died presumably in the Carmyle disrict
where did Jeannie have mr Black's children in New Zealand .
I wonder if the umbrella-making Chrissie got married in USA before John arrived in 1929.
The deaths are quite interesting with many Macdermids living til their 70's or 80's+surviving wars , and no deaths of children coming up yet.
Malcolm MacDermid 's untimely death in aged 48 in 1910 was due to falling off a roof ..I don't suppose it made the newspapers.
I don't know how his eldest son Duncan died in his 20's. ;

grandad was a tall man..at the heightof his fitness he competed in featherweight boxingwhen onshore ;his lieutenant ordered extra rations to build him up to next weight category but he got thinner !
it's been interesting sharing all my sisters documents, photos + trees going back to Stevensons in 1721,mckay's in 1819 now i need to transfer the info on here but must do some other chores first .

Extra details ; Alison has a lovely water colour of "The macDermid cottages,carmyle" by J.Brown C1900 grandad was born ..in".smallest house on banks of the Clyde which regularly flooded it ,our gandma visited this house when jeannie was still alive .and his mother still lived there".it was demolished in 1928

On the next page of John Macdermid's 1929 record of travel to USA, posted earlier by rootgatherer,.it says his nearest relative in UK is his brother Andrew Macdermid, 30 Deans Avenue, Cambuslang - and on a different record of the same voyage it says that was John's last address.

He was heading to his brother James Macdermid, 3017 Church Avenue, Brooklyn, NY; his brother (don't know which one) paid his passage; he was going to the US permanently; 5' 9" tall; fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes; he was an engineer.

Interesting if unimportant - he had blue eyes, but Chrissie and James had brown or black eyes.

\my grandfather Tommy's ship records show him starting as a boy 1st class in 1920 on the HMS Vivid and notes say he joned navy after his parents died .
