Thanks Rootgatherer that clears up that conundrum .

so Mrs MacDermid next of kin on 1923 James +Chrissie's passenger list record still can't be their mother
Andrew kyle Macdermid lived til 1964 wonder why he wasn't listed as next of kin so that leaves Duncan or Malcolm's widow or unmarried jeannie
unlikely that any of them were living at the Clydeford road address 12 years earlier
can Census be looked up by addresses on scots census ??.

Brigid, although Walter died 1916 , the additional notes on the CWGC website would added sometime after the end of the war. In this case we know now that it was after 1920. You sometimes see records of servicemen killed giving the name of their widow using a different surname if she has remarried sometime after his death but before the records were compiled.

brigid

brigid Report 29 Jul 2014 23:26

so grandad was 17 when she died but if she'd been ill for a long time his sister could have helped bring him up with the other young'uns .
( ps Argyll/gran In case you don't read the General chat board I did put an appreciation of all your help on there) .

Further back ; re nov 2012 post from rootgatherer have just been told from member that Jean's father, Andrew Kyle was brother in law to Margaret Edminton nee Glen which ties in with 1851 census for Agnes Glen

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Jul 2014 22:34

Actually, their mother Jean died in 1920:

1920 MACDERMID JEANIE
(Other surname KYLE) F 56 OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/01 0063

Still, I see what you mean.
Who's Mrs Mcdermid, then? A sister-in-law? Or an unmarried sister, who's been called Mrs instead of Miss? Or an aunt?

brigid

brigid Report 29 Jul 2014 17:34

Their mother had died pre 1916...brother Walter's army records have both parents deceased
also grandad Tommy said his eldest sister (agnes or jeannie)brought him up with little Chrissie + baby John
My grandad "ran away". . to sea aged 15 ??
I'd better check his navy records, but that would have been around 1919 .
. It was my great aunt Chrissie who came from America with toys for my father +his sister early 1930's ...

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Jul 2014 17:11

Duncan, Andrew, & Malcolm could still be living with their mother, Alisoun, (or elsewhere in Cambuslang), but she would be James & Christina's next-of-kin, therefore named on the shipping record.

Thanks so much for all your hard work arglyll gran
yes this is definitely them . .how exciting ;
we have a copy of family scroll from a Mcfarlane member (more distant cousins from the Stevenson side of family i believe) I'll have to add it to my tree on here or get Brigid to do it on hers .

The address of Mrs McDermid in Cambuslang will help for future research
it implies that either brothers Duncan ,Andrew or ,Malcolm were deceased or had left Cambuslang pre 1923

That makes sense because she was only 3 in 1911 probably taken to USA (with baby brother John )+ with Agnes + James Robertson sometime after 1919 ...we'll have to wait for 1921 Census. that's where they are remembered as being in the 30's/40's .although my aunt said jeannie went to new Zealand ..I can't ask for confirmation at the moment as her husband is very ill .

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Jul 2014 13:12

Christina (Chrissie) was MAC at birth, at least. No middle name.

1907 MACDERMID CHRISTINA F OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/01 0216

SP doesn't show any marriages for a Christina (or variant) Mcdermid (or variant) to anyone named Black, 1924-50, anywhere in Scotland.
Also no marriages for her to anyone of any name in Old Monklands.

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 29 Jul 2014 08:18

The distant cousins I have found so far have the Mac spelling in the 1900's that is the spelling on Walter's WW1 records
and his sister Agnes marriage by all account
so it's strange that Malcolm's war records show Mc
but Andrew Kyle Mc/Macdermid is the proof that consistancy did not prevail after 1900 if he was born Mac
married as Mc and died as Mac .

If Agnes + james robertson had children it could have been in USA

also whichever sister Jean or chrissie married J Black it could have been in New Zealand
Just wondering why last daughter not 1st was not named after maternal grandma ..could poor Jeannie Macdermid have had yet another child between Duncan + Agnes who died before the 1891 census .
