if i understand ;Annie Hanlon Macdermid ,christine..bucha...and Mary Grant Macdermid could all be Andrew Kyle macdermid's daughters ....or another of grandad's brothers .
the middle names may be clues to spouses name good for elimination purposes anyway .i'm tempted to look now but was on my way to bed

The only death dates I've posted are those of Thomas, Andrew and Duncan.

If you mean the list of possible births of possible children of Andrew, Mcdermid is the surname, as they are birth records. These women wouldn't be your grandfather's sisters, anyway. If they were daughters of Andrew, they would be his nieces.

Annie Hanlon Mcdermid, Christina Buchan (or Buchanan) Mcdermid, and Mary Grant Mcdermid.
The "Bucha" in Christine's name is just the abbreviation which shows up on SP for her middle name - the name would actually be either Buchan or Buchanan, but you'd have to see the actual cert to see the full name.

I have made contacts with 2 people who are related to cousins of my grandfather ;they share ancestors Duncan MacDermid b C1830+Agnes Mcfarlane

but still no evidence of cousins of my father with grandparents Malcolm Macd B1862 +Jean Kyle 1864

and I have 1 more spelling ; MacDermed

I think I can dismiss the 1923 death of Christine Bucha as she is the 1 aunt who my aunt has memories of from the 30's or 40's
and grandad didn't have a sister mary so i won't check the mary grant one unless that could be a sister in law .

If Duncan died in 1910 aged 27 could he have married + had children before then
Malcolm may have married after his army career he was still young ...unlike his brother Walter who died in 1916 Royal Scots fussiliers

As their father died in 1911 it must have been hard or them
i'm not sure of the accuracy of the married names of Jeannie + Agnes haven't found any proof that they married J.Black + J .Robertson respectively the marriages could have been in New Zealand /USA for all I know.
My aunt knows that her aunt Chrissie brought her a doll from the USA in the 30's but whether she was living there or visiting a sister I don't know .

Unfortunately, it's not possible to factor in mother's ms when searching for children on SP, and there are so many McDermid or variant births after 1920 in Lanarkshire, that it's impossible to know which, if any, were theirs. There were 44 McDermids born in Lanarkshire, without taking variations of spelling into account, 1920-30.
Assuming they lived in Old Monkland (but maybe they lived elsewhere) there are these possibilities:

I have been unable to trace cousins of my father's (Eric Macdermid 1950-2003) ;He was son of Thomas Allen b1903 and would have been named Malcolm if his parents had continued with the traditional naming system
Grandparents Malcolm 1862 in Old Monkshead and Jeannie nee Kyle b1864 cambuslang had 10 children (eldest Duncan b.1882 youngest John b1911 )
It would be easier to find out about their children if I lived in Scotland not Leicester !

my grandmother Mary(Polly)Blaine Stevenson always said she was a distant cousin of grandad Macdermid but i haven't worked out the connection yet ; via great grandma Kyle i think .
2 of grandma's sisters also married their cousins Stevenson + Mcfarlane names
These names crop up when I'm looking at the wrong Macdermids ....so i'm guessing this was very common in close knit communities .

There are several macdermids/mcdermids from Cumbuslang on family trees but noone seems to have more than 1 of my ancestors names and birth date ;i usually contact people who have more than 1 faamily member listed as it avoids mixing with distant cousins of same names but will try a few .

Thanks Malcom ,my father was quite insistant on using the Mac and the capital D but as he didn't live in Scotland most of his life he may not have known the Irish/scottish convention . Not much likelihood of any of us getting to edinburgh in the near future

Alisoun, if you have the chance, visit the Scotlands People centre in Edinburgh. For 15 pounds You can use their search rooms and computers from 9 a.m. to 4.30 pm weekdays. You can also have a free "taster session" ..a couple of hours with experts to assist you. This is a good way to learn the system.

Regarding spelling variations, obviously these are worse the further back you go but usually by the 20th century there is consistency. Errors in the statutory (post 1855) period are usually caused by census enumerators in the presence of illiterate citizens.

As a general rule a Mac name is of Irish origin and a Mc is Scottish.

So far I have these spellings in records .MacDermid, McDermid, McDearmid.Mcdiarmid the d at the end is pretty consistant tho

My mistake , Malcom MacDermid b1862+wife Jean b1864 were probably not alive in 1960 Also my aunt beleives that her father was looked after byanelder sister at some point before 1917 because hismother jean had already died .
