thanks Argyll gran ...yes this looks like her + confirms that John was a mcFarlane family name if American john was the grandson of this John he'd be the cousin of the Macdermids he welcomed in New York .

ArgyllGran Report 31 Jul 2014 12:37

This looks like the same family in 1951, with Agnes missing because she had married in 1850. The mother's listed under her maiden name, a common practice in Scottish censuses.
I wonder where John's gone?!

brigid Report 31 Jul 2014 12:37

like the possibility that Agnes maybe had a twin Martha

brigid

brigid Report 31 Jul 2014 12:45

if Agnes + Duncan married in 1850 she would have been living with her new husbands family in 1951 census;

Agnes is paternal grandma's name + jean is mothers name consistant with a 2nd + 3rd daughter .
EDIT
ps fairly normal for a 20 yr old john mcfarlane not to be with his parents for all kinds of reasons .....we don't know if the USA host J.Mc F was married .

ArgyllGran Report 31 Jul 2014 13:02

These are the only births of children of Walter McFarlane and Margaret Machan showing on SP. I wouldn't put too much faith in all the ages given in 1841, Brigid.
John's, at least, is a few years out - unless the birth record is for an earlier John who maybe died in infancy.

7/05/1835 MCFARLANE CHRISTIAN WALTER MCFARLANE/MARGARET MACHAN FR156 (FR156) F MEARNS /RENFREW 571/00 0020 0051

original Info on notes of siblings came from my uncles research + paternal grandmas memories re her husbands siblings ; she thought Duncan + Malcom had 2 children , in lanarkshire .and Jeannie Black having 3 children in New Zealand ; She had mentionned a Mailyn and now we know that was Chrissie's daughter . As Chrissie 's visit came to GB is one of my aunt's earliest memoriesin could she have come in 1929 not in the 30's before my dad was born + before mailyn was born .... with a present for the future baby + a doll for his 4 yr old sister .

James Duff Black's birth:

1893 BLACK JAMES DUFF M BOTHWELL /LANARK 625/01 0305

I still don't see his marriage to Jean in Scotland. As has already been suggested, perhaps they married in NZ.

That looks like the right James D black (RG and AG well done )so he should be in scotland in 1911 census

I feel guilty that i'm sitting back + letting you do all the hard work but I am also trying to keep aunt informed via my cousin + am gleaning info from 2, 2nd cousins via email ..hoping to sort out the right Agnes Mcfarlane .

I'm just popping in to check on emails facebook + this site when I can .

My paper notes are all really scruffy so I need to put them in order + transfer details on here onve i've confirmed facts .

Surprise mail from my aunt ..I thought her eyesight prevented email use;
"
oops thought I'd copied her own words ; Chrissie is the only sibling she remembers her coming from USA 'when aged about 5 and my father eric about 2

My aunt Mary tells the story of they couldn't take up Chrissie's offer for the children to go to USA to safety during WW2 but as their dad was away at sea they didn't have parental permission ,mary was v.disappointed not to go ...until they learnt that was the ship with so many child passsengers that was bombed + sank !
