Thanks for the replies so far: Margaret and James were apparently separated soon after their son was born. Her father in his will granted Margaret an income provided she have no contact with James. The war grave record for John Jackson gives him as "Son of James and Margaret Thorpe, of 18, Cooper St., Withington, Manchester in 1916." which could imply that they were living together (perhaps now her father had been dead for 20 years). Looks like I need to get the marriage certificate!

Cheers, Martin

Who was HIS father?

From the marriage cert.......................

If he isn't on a census with his wife, you can't hope to trace him without the marriage cert info

He could have been any age................

Hello. I am trying to find details of the above person, probably born around 1855 in the Manchester area. He married Margaret JACKSON (born 1858 in Withington) in 1879 at Chorlton Registry Office. Her parents were John and Margaret JACKSON. They had a son John Jackson THORPE born 1888 in Withington (he died in 1916 from injuries sustained in WW1).
James is not mentioned in any census as far as I can see, although Margaret is shown living with her father as married in 1881. I would like to find out about his ancestors and his whereabouts after 1888. Thanks for any help anyone can give.
