Help needed I have something wrong not sure what these are details I have
John Carter b abt 1777 Sedgley Staffordshire married 1797 to Ann Barber I have John's father as Thomas Carter married to Phebe ?
I also have 2 siblings for John, Allen Carter b 1771 and William b1780

I thought these where correct as John and Ann had a daughter Phebe b1807 which would fit with who I thought was John's mother,The problem arose when I sent for John's death cert
He died 1839 aged 63 in Sedgley but it has fathers name as Jacob Carter the thing is John and Ann also had a son Jacob b 1814 which again would fit with John's father on death cert
I cannot find a john Carter with father Jacob on any of the sites I've tried GR, Ancestry, FMP. FreeReg or family search so I am not sure now if I have wrong parents and siblings on my tree for John or maybe the wrong John Carter death cert

Kay???? Report 8 Nov 2012 17:16

Hi Mary,

Am puzzled at the name of Johns father on his death certificate, unless he was the one to register th death?

Normally English ones dont have a fathers name, only on marriage and birth if applicable.

The sites you have looked at,are taken from parish church registeres,,,,,not all have survived though various means,,,,,,fire.water.theft.,lost or in just too fragile.state.

hello Kay,

Some of the cert's a little hard to read but under the date of death14th Feb 1839 it looks like (at the fathers) no address given then on informant it says mark of Jacob Carter in attendance the father ?

Might this Jacob be his son - attending his father? Obviously not impossible, but if John was 63 his father would probably have been at least 85. I know some people lived to a good age, but not as commonly back then.

ADDED do you fancy PM'ing me the image of the cert? Might be interesting to see it.

Had a quick look but I really think that Jacob is not named as the 'Father'.

If you look at the other 'f's on the cert they do not match.

The first column says death took place at 'the ????' - Looks like father but isn't !

Column 7 says 'In attendance at 'the ?????' - this appears to be an address of some sort .

I will look again later but I would not worry about Jacob being the 'father' !!!

Have had a look too, and was about to say the same - there doesn't seem to be a 'th' in the word, though it does end 'er' I think. I can see why you read it as father but I am not convinced.
There seems to be just one Jacob Carter in Dudley 1841, and I assume this is the son.
ADDED actually the last letter is 'e' probably? Lake???

Thank you both for looking I'm still not sure what it is Maybe it is some kind of Hospital but never heard of any Lake??? in this area I thought maybe the first letter could be S

I have not found another Jacob so maybe it is the son like you said I will carry on trying to decipher cert if you come up with any other ideas please let me know

Kind regards

Maybe he died when they were out fishing!!!
Seriously, my money would be on the informant being his son. Either way i do not think it says father.
jan :-D

Dea

Dea Report 9 Nov 2012 19:39

It is not an 's' - compare it with the 's' of seventeen in the next column.
!

I would still say that it says Lake or Lakes but it does NOT say father !
