George Ross is my 4 times great grandfather, he married Sarah Bickley on April 12 1818 in St Peter's Church, Wolverhampton, they has 12 children, Mary 1818, Joseph 1820, Thomas 1822, Lucy 1825, Enoch 1827, Cecily 1828, Helen 1830, George 1836, Ellen 1838, Sarah 1841, Adam 1843, and Selina 1847. The family lived in Bloxwich and Blakenall Heath for many years and some of them still do. Joseph is my 3 times great grandfather. He died in January 1884 in Bloxwich. I have a significant amount of information about George's children, and Joseph's family, and descendants that I will share if anyone needs it. George Ross is a black hole, I have him on Censuses from 1841 to 1881, born approx 1798 and on each his birthplace is listed as Chesterfield, mostly in Derbyshire, but on one it’s Yorkshire, which I think is incorrect, not sure if there is a Chesterfield in Yorkshire. I am in Canada! The marriage lists witnesses as Sarah's brother William, the other witness must have been someone connected to the church as he appears as witness on many marriages. I have looked for George's birth everywhere and anywhere that seems to make sense and I can find a few George Rosses, but none that are born in Derbyshire. If anyone is able to research this for me, has any information or can suggest what my next steps should be it would be terrific.

Thanks I always thought the comment was NR-not recorded, as he seems to know on the following censuses, or the person giving the info didn't know, or it was unreadable on the original form.
I have contacted other members with Ross trees the consensus seems to be he was from Derbyshire. I may have had contact with Derek through Curious Fox, or perhaps there are 2 Dereks with Derbyshire expertise. I have contacted the Wolverhampton archives regarding getting a copy of the parish record for the 1818 marriage, they say they have the record so waiting for a reply. Is the record likely to have information on fathers name or birthplace?

About the NR, NK or apparently it is supposed to be NB found on early censuses, it means Not Born in this county.

Only 1841 has 'not born in county'....and it is denoted simply by the letter N, as the heading is Born in County..............yes or no.


NB means Nota Bene, and is used in completely different circumstances
