'Deceased' fathers didn't always actually exist.........

As Reggie says........"deceased" father's on marriage certificates were sometimes "made up" to look more respectable in front of the in-laws.

I have also found that sometimes the names Arthur and Alfred are interchangeable just like Edwin and Edward.

I had an uncle whose name was Alfred but was known throughout his career in the navy as Arthur.

If you do have George Arthur's marriage certificate then please give us ALL of the information on it - even witnesses names can sometimes help.

George Arthur Cooke marriage certificate St Marys Nuneaton.
Jan 1st 1918
George Arthur Cooke aged 24 Bachelor Private West Yorks 21 Rochfort Street Kentish Town Father Frederick William Cooke (deceased) ****keeper

Amy Alice West 25 Spinster Saleswoman 103 Earl Road Father Edward West, Miner
Witnesses Edward West (father) and Ada Emily Cooke (don't know what relation)

We know everything about him from 1914 up to his death in 1936. Lived in Islington with wife Amy from about 1920. Don't know where he was born or his Mothers name. Not only has he a common surname, it appears on his war record that he used an alias George Mills and signed some of the pages George Albert instead of George Arthur.
