replying to Margaret and above - I think I will never find a record of her birth, and have no idea what school she attended or indeed much else. And to Rose - yes there are many others. My grandmother may have gone off with my grandfather before he ceased having children with his wife, then! No surprise really. More research to do, I think..... Thanks to everyone trying to help, but I sense little chance of getting a true picture for some time to come...or maybe never.

Perhaps your mum wasn't registered at birth. I searched for years for my mother's
Birth Certificate. I too had a thread " looking for mothers Birth Certificate " and had a very supportive team of helpers Who did trace my mother and find her death aged 92. I sent for the death certificate which was correct. But i still cannot find her Birth Certificate. I have a Birth Date taken from an Admission form when mother was entered at school, No certificate given, but DOB given by mother's evidence, So perhaps ? if you know which school your mother was registered, you could write to the education committee.

Cheers all! Mother's birth date was (I think!) 12th July 1927...but you may know better! Mum married both dates. Dad died in 1958. Gwendoline J and Lanceley C G are both siblings as you have spotted. Phyllis J should have been recorded as Brewer. How do you all get to be so good at this?!! I'd love to know where Violet went in 1901, too! I found her on the 1891 Census but nowt on 1901!!
