Some advice please

My wife's great Uncle William George (b. 1890; father William 1867-1931; mother Caroline James 1864-1948) went to South America apparently to work on the railways, whether that was to work on the tracks or on the trains no one seems to know. Other Cornishmen were there too and it is believed that one of them came back to Redruth and informed the family that William had been killed when bandits or guerrillas made an attack on them. We do not even know what South American country he went to.

I know it's a long shot but can anyone suggest how I might research this? Thanks.

His death should have been registered at the British Consulate for the country.
