He died aged 80 in Islington in 1939.

The 1891 census has him borm in Herefordshire.

Hello GB... 1901 gives his birth place as Middllesex but 1911 it is Herefordshire.

He also gives his name as John G in1901 and he is a widower.

The fact that William was not marked as deceased does not mean he was still alive.

Depends on whether the question was asked or not

How do you know his father was alive in 1883?

Astra .. I assumed so as he wasn't shown as deceased on his son's wedding cert.

If I read your post correctly you are looking at the wrong family as his father was William.
