Hi there i am currently searching for information on my grandmother Patience Coles. She was born 13.10.1927 as this is what it states on her marriage and. I only got her maiden name from her marriage certificate to my grandfather who was Victor David Roder. We dont have much to go on with my grandmother we arent sure if she was adopted into the Coles family or the summers family, as we havent been able to trace a birth for the above date or any names linking to her.

We were told her family name was summers and her adoptive name was probably coles. She often talked about her father being a doctor but again we arent sure if this was her blood father or adopted i am guessing it was adopted family. My dad tells me she had brothers maybe one called Ron summers and a sister called Mary. She grew up either around Bournmouth, somerset or possible dorset. These areas are what have be mentioned in the past to my dad when growing up.

My grandmother had 3 children a daughter jean and 2 sons paul and david. David was the first child to be born in 1946 which is my dad and then the 2 followed. I we had more info to go but we dont have much but its good that we have names i suppose. My grandmother sadly died in the 1970s of breast cancer. We would be greatful for any help of where to look or if anyone recognises this story that would be fab! I dont have her death certificate yet but would that be worth getting? on her marriage cert it does state her father as being Cedric Coles.

Have you tried looking for info about Cedric Coles?

What was his occupation on the marriage cert?

BUT...............be very wary about family 'stories'..............particularly if parentage is doubtful.

If her surname at marriage was the same as the man she named as her father, clearly, any 'adoption' was BY the Coles family

Marriage certs in England/Wales do NOT record birth dates.

What were the names of the witnesses?

Hi there well all we have are stories to go by i think it states he was a farmer or a builder if i can remember on the marriage cert of my grandparents. I also think that possibly COLES were the adopted family too and summers was the blood family. My dad tells of stories gettimg large farming sets for xmas from his mothers side of the family.

There are only two Cedric Coles on the 1911 census. One has a middle name and is from the north of the country. This is the other one:-

I wonder if this marriage and birth could be a possibility (although it would rule out the adoption theory):-

This could possibly be the marriage of the Cedric in the 1911 census (his first name could be after his father Francis):-

Name: COLES, Frank C
Registration district: Bideford
County: Devon
Year of registration: 1920
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Blight
Volume no: 5B
Page no: 1162

Name: BLIGHT, Matilda
Registration district: Bideford
County: Devon
Year of registration: 1920
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Coles
Volume no: 5B
Page no: 1162
------
There is then this birth which would cover the date you say your grandmother was born:-

Name: COLE, Elizabeth P M -----(note her second name could be Patience and the "s" could have been missed off the record on the index)
Registration district: Bideford
County: Devon
Year of registration: 1927
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Mother's maiden name: Blight
Volume no: 5B
Page no: 605

Possible sibling of the above:-

Name: COLE, Jean M ---(could this be sister mary if she used middle name?)
Registration district: Plymouth
County: Devon
Year of registration: 1932
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Mother's maiden name: Blight
Volume no: 5B

awwwwwwww you have really shed more light on the whole thing tho i am going to investigate this family further and see if anyone knows of an adoption that took place. She was definately adopted its just tracing her blood family name which was summers.
