Just wondering about the Isabella-James Cameron match above. They are supposed to have been married 7/12/1886 in Dollar (someone told me), but according to the 1891 census, her eldest child is 10 and the next one 9. I'll leave that puzzle for a while. Bit of a busy time coming up this week so I'll get back to you a.s.a.p. Thanks again.

Yes James CAMPBELL had been married twice --first in 31/12/ 1879 to Elizabeth Campbell (maiden name AND married surname)
(Elizabeths parents were John Campbell born c1811 and Margaret ROBERTSON born c1816)
On the tree on Ancestry --but I haven't done a search on SP to make sure --so needs verifying
James and his first wife Elizabeth had
Margaret Robertson CAMPBELL---1880 --1957
Jemima Janet CAMPBELL 1882 -
Elizabeth Catherine CAMPBELL--1884 --1860
Mary CAMPBELL--1885 -1950
James' wife Elizabeth died on 28 February 1886 age 30 years

and then on 7/12/1886 James married Isabella (I sent you this marriage from SP and it does say on it that James was a Widower.)
Again from the ancestry tree it say James and Isabella had

So James' first four children (according to the Ancestry tree) would have been Isabella's stepchildren.

Our emails have been crossing in the wires. Yes, I thought there might be some stepchildren, once I saw James Campbell's wedding registration. Brave girl, only 22, taking on 4 children and an older man. I'll bet they were pleased to see some testosterone with the seventh child! But then to lose the first and possibly the second son to the war - dreadful. Maybe that's why little Duncan didn't live long: poor Isabella and James would be grief-stricken - though every family would be the same. What terrible times, and then for it all to happen again in 1938. Madness.
I didn't see Mary (1885?) on the 1891 census above.
It's so easy to get the wrong family. If we hadn't known that James remarried, I'd have thought this US 1900 census entry was him and Elizabeth having emigrated in 1899 after the first two girls were married. The dates were so close. I do like the way the US census shows how many years they've been married, and gives their month of birth too. Despite that, the ages they put on that particular print out are different from the ones on the actual image. 47 is given as 48 and 49 is given as 50, though the girls' ages, 16 and 13, aren't changed:

The 1881 census used to be so easy and a joy to search on LDS, but it's gone now. It seems they've sold it all off to the private genealogy sites. Maybe they couldn't cope with the muddle of submitted trees. But is it any less risky? The transcriptions are incredibly creative, and not only in spelling. I have a printed list of trees on Ancestry.com each claiming my most distant ancestor on my mother's side, yet giving him a variety of wives!
The anniversary of Elizabeth's death was just a few days ago. I wonder whether she died in childbirth but Mary survived?
Now I see where the name Angus comes from. My grandfather (1877) and my father (1908) were both Angus, and my nephew is Innes -- though my brother will be surprised to see an earlier Innes in the family.
Does the Ancestry tree give wedding details for James's first wedding, so we might know whether Isabella's father, Peter Robertson (wife Isabella Gray, nee Cameron), and Elizabeth Campbell's mother, Margaret Robertson, are siblings?
