Hi,
I am looking for any info on Beatrice May Humphries, born 1904 Wells Somerset. Her parents may have been John and Susan, and I believe she had a brother John/Jack. So far I cannot find anything about her.

Thanks for your quick reply. She was an old friends mother and he has been trying to find out about her family. I note from your reply she is on the census as Beatress not Beatrice, so that's why I could not find her.
So far yours is the only info he has so now at least we have a starting point. It's the right family as John was a stone mason.

A copy of her birth certificate will give her mother's maiden name so you can then work back:

Her name was written as Beatress on the original 1911 image but her dad (who filled the form in) had put his own name as Jhon so spelling may not have been his strongest point!

I found a marriage of a John Humphries to a Susan Rumbold Sept 1/4 1892 Wincanton. I tried to look her up but not getting too far. I only can rely on free census. I contacted my friend and the family still lived at the same address in 1960s as was on 1911 census! I noticed his spelling was bad on the other names! I will try to sort out John's side 1st I think.

Normally we expect a marriage to be near the bride's birthplace but I wouldn't dismiss this for Susan's parents (would need further checking)

This is a banns record, can't locate an actual marriage.

In the Western Gazette of 1 October 1875 a Robert Rumble of Wincanton was fined 5s (inc costs) for not sending his children to school. (He was fined 2s 6d for the same thing in 1880)

Western Gazette, 2 July 1880 - Emma Rumble, wife of Robert of Wincanton, was fined 5s 6d for beating Wm Ashworth (11) with a stick. She admitted the offence but claimed he had called her names and was very saucy.

The Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette dated 4 August 1887 carried a report about the Somerset Industrial School for Boys. In it there is mention of a Robert Rumble who won a prize for "careful work throughout the year". (Possibly the son of Robert & Emma born 1876?)

Just spoken to Beatrices son, who is now in his 70's and he seems to recall the name Rumble from his youth! As you say it may have been misheard.
Am printing all this so will have to sort it out. Thanks there's a lot of info here.

On 1881 census there's John aged 16 who I think was Beatrice's Father, and his mother Elizabeth aged 45 and a widow. I found a marriage of a John Humphries to an Elizabeth White in 1863 Wincanton. These must be Beatrices Grandparents I think.

There only seems to be one Susan Rumble in Somerset according to the 1881 census so am hoping this next item is about her:

The Western Gazette 20 July 1883 reported on a Flower & Livestock show promoted by the Wincanton Church Sunday school for its scholars. A Susan Rumble won a commendation in the best doe rabbit category.
