The GRO record is the Numbering system that the General Register Office at Southport gives to Birth , Marriages and Deaths. You quote the ref to them when you order a certificate

On births after the 3rd quarter of 1911 they included the mums maiden name in the ref.

The records are listed in quarters for each year and are when the event was registered at the local Register Office and not when it actually happened.

For Instance my dad was born late Dec 1907. you have 6 weeks to register a birth and his mum registered him at the end on Jan 1908 so his birth ref shows in March quarter of 1908.

Would you like your dads record looked up as an example and we can the cross check it for Roberts birth

This is the free site that you need to find births deaths and marriages from 1837 up to around the 1950's.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

It is invaluable for your research - have a play around with it.

p.s. you will find both your father's and your uncle's birth details on there.
