Thanks to all who answered my question about the workhouse in Southwark,as she had TB that was the cause of her death i can now see why she probably went there as she needed treatment.I have visited the Mint street site and there is an exhibition at the London Metropolitan Archives at the moment about the workhouses. My grandfather was born in Southwark workhouse in 1870 and that was in Mint Street. It's the only one that comes up for Southwark on the workhouses site. |

Remember that at that time the workhouse infirmary was often the place where ordinary people who could not afford to pay for their medical treatment (No NHS until 1947) went to get treated for their ailments. Dying in a workhouse did not necessarily mean that you were an inmate of the workhouse. |

I have a death certificate for a relative who died in the workhouse where she was a general servant,it says southwark workhouse,as there were a few how can i find out which one.She died in 1912.She lived in the Waterloo Rd. |
