I would like to find out more about William and his ancestors. He married Nellie Euesden in 1915 at Islington and I believe his parents were Charles J Astell and Emily Smedley. I have his marriage certificate which states that Charles was his father and Charles W was his witness .I guess that Charles W was his brother. The family moved from Sheffield to London. William went to war in 1915 and apparently returned to the UK in March 1919.
Many thanks,
Pat

Have you got his birth certificate, his parents' marriage certificate, and any census entries (to save us duplicating information)?
Thank-you

patrice Report 6 Dec 2012 21:54

I do believe we are talking about the same family. I do have Williams marriage certificate but not his birth certificate. His residence at the time of his marriage was Viables Camp Basingstoke and he was a Sergeant in the AS Corps. His father Charles's occupation is recorded as a mechanical engineer.

Thanks, Patrice.

Have you tried Search All Trees under the Search button above?

You can put the names of the family in and see if anyone else has them.

If you find a possible match you can contact the tree owner to see if you have a connection.

I would suggest that you delete the automatic message about looking at their tree. Most members will not open their trees to you until a connection has been established so just type your own message about who you think you may have in common.

pm received:

I have a copy of Williams certificate of employment during the war which is faded and also his certificate of transfer to reserve . His regt no is 016600 ASC enlisted 1/9/14

.. so the same as posted above. On that record it confirms what Patrice has already stated.

Thank you all for your replies and advice.
Lynski I have found the Maybury connection and think that possibly Rosina's 5th child was Emma who was born 1905 Jun qtr 9c 692 and died 1905 July qtr 9c 396. The 5th child had died before the 1911 census.
Did Rosina 1908 and Winnfred marry the Gasgoine brothers?

Patchem I cannot find William at all in either the 1901 or 1911 census.

Looking at William's Military Record it states that his father was

James William Astell.......strange!

This has been crossed out when he married Nellie....

patrice

patrice Report 7 Dec 2012 19:21

I have not seen William's military record just his certificate of employment and transfer certificate which does not have his next of kins name. However, on William's marriage certificate to Nellie it clearly shows his father as Charles Astell and his witness as C.W. Astell. Perhaps the name should read Charles James William Astell. It is strange!
