Regarding Abraham Punter - there are numerous newspaper articles about him.

In the earlier articles he appears to be a beer-house keeper and was charged variously with stealing turnips, rabbits, damaging crops.

The later one (1871) obtained a cart worth £2 by false pretences.

More from the newspaper archives:

Amos Punter - he was in 1850 a youth of about 18. He stole 5 hens eggs from a Matthew Redhead, farmer of Kinsman Green, Harpenden, who he was employed by.

Arthur Punter - in 1892 stole kidney beans, potatoes and other items from allotments. In 1890 was had up for stealing a brooch, walking stick, clock, brushes and workman materials. Previously done for stealing a pony and trap.
