Jean Report 16 Dec 2012 18:25

I have been looking for my gt gt grandfather John Parker born abt 1822 in Manchester and I wasnt sure of my gt gt grandmother Anns maiden name she was born abt 1827. I have found their marriage in 1845 in the Church which is now the Manchester Cathedral. Her maiden name I have now found was Johnson but the strange part is that on the census he is named John but on the marriage certificate it gives his name as William. Their first child is named William but why on the census is his father named John.
Any ideas.

How do you know you have found the right marriage (certificate) for the couple?

Did you get Ann's maiden name from the birth cert of one of her children?

John Parker's father was Joseph.
What does your marriage cert say for William's father ?

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 16 Dec 2012 19:04

Your 1881 census with the same occupation for John as in 1851, and with the Priestman relatives looks very good, Londonbelle.

Certianly ties together well with the Parker-Priestman marriage of 1845.

The image for the above transcription is exceedingly faint.

EDIT: I partly went for this one as Joseph and Sarah may have been the parents, but wondered where you got Joseph as being John's father, Mike?

Trouble with the 1841 census ia that age could be out by up to 4 yrs, and we are dealing with such a common name.

There seems to be a link between James Priestman 'nephew' to the Parkers in 1881 as posted by Londonbelle, and the family I think is Ann Priestman's, in census 1841 as I posted earlier.

Note on the 1841 census Agnes was not born in county (Lancashire) so this would fit with her birthplace of London in 1851.

EDIT: Seems the children actually belong to Jane born 1824, not Agnes, so 'nephew' would be correct:

OH NO!!!!!!!

OK - looks like TWO John Parkers (dyer) born c1822/23 were both married to an Ann.

This one has the son Joseph who probably married Mary Priestman, so it probably also means his mother is the Ann Priestman who married John Parker in 1845, and they are NOT the right family if Jean wants the family with son William born 1848.

Family with William 1848 in census 1851 posted by me towards beginning of thread living at 7, Cotton Street, Broughton, Salford County: Lancashire.

This family:

Census 1851

Address: 1, Chestnut Street, Manchester
County: Lancashire

PARKER, John Head Married F 29 1822 Silk Dyer Salford, Lancashire
PARKER, Ann Wife Married F 2- Salford, Lancashire
PARKER, Agnes Dau F 5 1846 Salford, Lancashire
PARKER, Joseph Son M 1 1850 Salford, Lancashire<<<<

Which sadly leaves Jean's original question unanswered :-(

this is the Johnson / Parker marriage

according to freebmd Ann married in the name of Oldham which means this marriage either was her 2nd marriage or her father gave his name as Johnson. does the certificate you have say she was a widow?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 17 Dec 2012 13:24

Jean
have you got your gt grandfather's birth certificate which would tell you who his parents were and his mother's maiden name. Without that as it is a common surname you could be following entirely the wrong family

Jean

Jean Report 17 Dec 2012 17:59

One of the John Parkers cant be the one Im looking for as the 1881 census that has a member of the Priestman family in it cant be right as there is no mention of John and Anns youngest daughter Emma born abt 1869.

Jean

Jean Report 17 Dec 2012 18:08

I have the birth certificate of Emma Parker the youngest child of John and Ann Parker. It states the mothers name was formerly Johnson and in 1869 they were then living at 93 Chapel Street Manchester

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 17 Dec 2012 18:18

The one with the Priestman family in 1881 is definitely not right, that is the one whose son Joseph married Mary Priestman, and the parents are probably the John Parker and Ann Priestman who married in 1845.

It's quite confusing that both Johns were born around the same time, and at some point in their lives were both dyers.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 17 Dec 2012 18:22

I think this is your family in 1881, comparing the names to the family in the 1871 census I posted earlier in the thread, where John was a dubber in a cotton mill, and the family were living in Portugal Street.

Census 1881:

Address: 17, Black Abbey St, Accrington County: Lancashire

EDIT: Jas Makinson, grand son, is almost certainly the child of Mary Ellen Parker, daur of John and Ann.

Another Parker - Johnson marriage.

Well, we have William Parker marrying Ann Oldham nee Johnson,

Just to muddy the waters further we also have a John Parker marrying a Teresa Johnson.

PARKER John
JOHNSON Teresa
1844 Eccles Parish St Mary\'s Salford
Lancashire C1/6/466

Can't find a Teresa Parker with a John Parker in 1851.

William was used as a name for one of John and Ann's children, but Teresa wasn't.
