:-( why can't anyone help me here? :-S

Elaine

Elaine Report 20 Jan 2013 22:43

James Webb was noted as 'also known as James Kenton.' I am now searching for any males that may have been the father of James. I think it quite possible that a Webb lassy fell pregnant to a Kenton. I would appreciate help search for healthy virile Kentons around 1778 possible near Bromham. Worth investigating.

How can I get further help on this site. I am wondering if the James Webb which is the horse thief btw and in his criminal records also know as James Kenton could have been fathered by a Kenton? I have a few records of Kentons one William Kenton was transported to Australia but doesn't appear to have arrived, possibly aboard one of those ill fated hulks that sank en route. So I am wondering where to start here James was born in approximately 1779 and there appears to be a Mary Webb that had a James around that time, there is no fathers name. Could this be the case how do I find out?

Elaine

Elaine Report 28 Dec 2012 06:06

That is our James we think Beverley W. I have noticed that this James was also noted as a labourer and also known
as James Kenton Webb on his court papers. I am going backwards on this but I am picking James mother could have been Mary Webb and his father a Mr Kenton. The reason I'm picking his mum was Mary is that what Grace and James named their only girl Mary(stab in the dark really). Another researcher has sent me a lot of paper work including James ticket of leave Sydney Australia 26 May 1828.

Chris ho
Thanks. Will check. Can't remember if I been there yet.

Elaine Report 23 Dec 2012 02:56

That is so very true Beverley. And as you have seen I made the mistake of 100 years at the beginning of this discussion page. Penny and Lorraine picked that up. Thanks girls. If that person reporting the d.o.b. was a member of the family and numerically dyslectic like me (self diagnosis) its not very helpful to researchers at all.

Wonder if anything held at Berkshire R O, relating, might have more info.

Birth, Occupation & Death
Date of Birth: 1774 <<<<<<<<
Occupation: Labourer
Date of Death: 1831
Age: 57 years

Sentenced to Life
Crime: Stealing a horse & saddle
Convicted at: Berks Assizes

This is presumably where the d.o.b. came from, calculating backwards.
However the age at death is only accurate if the person reporting the death had good information.

Just seen that posting you have added to. His dad was a blacksmith. Oh dear. probably not our James, mind you our James did steal a horse. He has been noted as a sawyer or labourer. Was this James a convict?

Elaine Report 21 Dec 2012 23:42

and then there's this one which is only 12 miles from Hadstock.

name: James Webb
baptism/christening date: 17 Feb 1779
baptism/christening place: STETCHWORTH, CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND
father's name: John Webb
mother's name: Mary
indexing project (batch) number: C13832-1

Have cut and pasted this report from you Ozibird. I find this particularly interesting as John and Mary feature in our family. along with Thomas, James and Robert. These names are what I look for when researching. George and Joyce have never figured in names in our family history. I have a gut feeling you have hit pay dirt here.

Elaine

Elaine Report 21 Dec 2012 23:34

We have proved conclusively that our James Webb, our convict, did not marry Grace Skippage. So we are going back and are researching the James born to George and Joyce Webb the very same you have come up with. However his birth year of 1779 Bromham, Wiltshire, given on his ticket of leave, does not tally with his burial cerificate which gives his age of 53 when he was buried on 14th April 1831 in NSW. We are looking at this angle at the moment.
There is a baptism Jan 6 1778 (should that be 1778) That baptism could be our James. a worn 8 can look like a nine.
Thanking everyone for your input to date.
