Missing Gormley Family - William, Samuel, Rebecca

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Claire

Claire Report 21 Dec 2012 02:18

I have an entire family missing from my family tree in relatively recent history. They were born and registered in Northern Ireland, Strabane.

In the 1911 Census there was, Samuel Gormley 46, Rebecca Gormley (nee Leeper) 37, Elizabeth 0, William John 7, Robert 12, Samuel 4 and Maud 10.

I suspect Robert may have emigrated to America but have found no trace of any of the family beyond marriage records of the parents and births of the children.

Any info gratefully received!!

Thanks

Claire

The age is out but I cant find a death in Oz for him. I wonder if the family left for Australia after his death? This would fit with the shipping record K posted earlier...NOK mother and not the father.

So,Rebecca went to Oz after 1925 by the looks of things, this might account for not finding all the children in Australia, they may have married and stayed in Ireland

Thank you very much for all of this. Looks like most of these are the ones I was looking for. The age is off for Samuel's death in Ireland but my DOB comes from church records not civil so that could be where the difference comes from.

I can't find any record of Robert, Rebecca or Samuel being on passenger lists to Australia......is this normal?

The other Samuel who went to America is from another line of the family that I have already traced.

I have contacted the owner of the tree on ancestry to see if they can give some more details regarding the family.

As you all have been so helpful and are obviously much more experienced than I am at this......do you have any suggestions for filling in gaps in Irish family trees further back. I basically used the church records to go back as far as I could as well as the death records but ran out of records!

Thanks again

Claire

Sadly no death notices for any of these but I found Robert's burial at Enfield Cemetery in SA at www.genealogysa.org.au/resources/online-databases.html

He was 53 and his last abode was Prospect SA.

Do you know if daughter Elizabeth also came to Oz?

There is a death for Elizabeth GEORGE nee GORMLEY, parents not stated, aged 51 in 1962. She died in Burwood, Victoria (reg 16276). Maybe she was already married when she arrived?

Thanks Cherilyn, I have just checked this website and requested more info. I suspect this is the correct person as someone else with family knowledge said that Elizabeth married a Mr George.

Maud apparently married a Mr Henderson. More details (if anyone can get them) would be gratefully received!!

Family talk frm my side says that the whole family emigrated and left a disabled child in Ireland. I'm starting to think this was William as he is the only one I haven't managed to get details for as
yet.

I have a wedding in Ireland later on in the Spring so I pan to go to the births, deaths & marriages office to see if I can find him. I plan to go to PRONI at the same time. If anyone is needing info from NI that they can't get on-line, let me know and I'll see what I can do when I'm there

Cheers
