BM - as I said right at the beginning, if Annie and George Chamberlain had ever really married (no matter where in the world it happened) then she would have used the name Chamberlain on her marriage to Henry Lewsey. I also said that divorce was almost unheard of back then for ordinary people (it was way too expensive) so if George didn't die until 1918 then she was either legally unmarried in 1906 or committing bigamy (not actually that uncommon). I think the former is more likely.

I really think you should invest in that 1906 marriage certificate.

Where did you find George's death in 1918?

Just a slight correction for 1911 census:-states having 2 children, not 1 (l living and 1 died)

Marie, that is him in 1911. Could the 10 years have been the time he was married to Annie or maybe Catherine?

Having looked at George Chamberlain in the census's he never seems to live with Annie Aikenhead, neither does he seem to live with a Catherine Kerr.

So what do you think could have happened?

Could he have married Catherine and she died but he then met Annie and had children with her but never married? Or maybe married her abroad?

Seeing as Annie seems to be missing from a census, and George is on the same one (I think) could they have married abroad?

Thanks :-)

Hi BM - the army record is from FindMyPast.

Couldn't resist looking at that 1876 marriage!

He married Catherine Kerr, spinster, a 22 year old domestic servant who lived 27 Primrose Street, Leith. She was the daughter of George Kerr, a baker journeyman and Margaret nee Hunter

George was 24, the son of George Chamberlain, housepainter and glazer, and Rose nee Morgan.

The bounder!!

I guess on the service records he's added Annie's name in front of his real wife's to avoid awkward questions. What a knave.

BradM

BradM Report 27 Dec 2012 16:17

Marie, thank you for the army record. Maybe he thought that Annie Carnegie Chamberlain's mother's maiden name was Kerr seeing as Annie's father re married Margaret Kerr?

Also, may I ask where you got the army record from?

Thanks. :-)

Looks like MarieCeleste is right.
SP does have an 1876 marriage in Leith, between George Chamberlain and CATHERINE Kerr.

There's a rabbit off somewhere! The 1881 posted above shows Annie and Georgina at 144 Clarendon Street.

Found these service records:

British Army Service Records 1760-1915

First name(s): George
Last name: CHAMBERLAIN
Calculated year of birth: 1852
Parish of birth: Marylebone
Town of birth: London
County of birth: Middlesex
Age at attestation: 22 years
Attestation date: 20 April 1874
Attestation corps: Army Hospital Corps
Attestation soldier number: 2634
Discharge rank:
Discharge corps:
Discharge soldier number:
The National Archives reference: WO97 / 2480 / 140

In the records it refers to his wife Annie at 144 Clarendon Street BUT under the marriage details it says he married Annie Catherine Kerr on 19 May 1876 in Leith, Scotland

(He was a habitual deserter but temperate, painter and glazer by trade when he attested 1874)
