There is a William Marsland in Gorton Cemetery which will probably be the one who died in Chorlton, but the date is consistent with your William.

I don't think I communicated what I meant to in above posting with the 2 deaths!
I was suggesting that maybe the William who died in Chorlton is more likely to be the one buried in Hurst cemetery, as Chorlton covers Withington.

The info on the death cert is only as good as what the informant knew, and the ages are often out by a year or two - he may have lied about his age during his lifetime, it's not just the women who do it!

However, I would think when and if you ever find his burial the age will be stated as 64 as on the death cert. So maybe check again using this age?

Know I am clutching at straws as I am not able to find out where he could be buried in Salford even though I have checked with the local authority cemeteries and all local churches.

His certificate says he died in Salford and his age is given as 64 although I have certificates to verify his dob was 18.4.1857 and his dod 8.1.1922 which makes his age at death to be 66 which tallied with the burial record at Hurst cemetery. I have also just noticed on his death certificate cause of death is given at (1) Bronchitis - No P.M.

Pretty sure a death has to be registered in the district it happened - although I believe you can register it at your nearest office the record is then passed onto the relevant district. Your grandfather was recorded in Salford so I think he must have died there, but the age given is 64 - does this tally with the death certificate? Does the certificate say where he died?

Yes Jan the age is identical. Have to go now to see to the evening meal.

Is the age identical or might this be the other William? Chorlton covered Withington.

I would have thought it unlikely to be the right one - Salford had it's own workhouse and hospital, The Withington workhouse did not cover the parish of Salford.

Withington workhouse also became a hospital - my son was born there in the early 1980s!

Have you checked the death index for the same quarter to see if there is another one with your grandfather's name/age in the Manchester area?

His name was William Marsland and he was 66 when he died.

His death cert should say where he died,

People did get a bit annoyed!! when relations were shown a born/died in the local workhouse Infirmary even though the relation hadnt been in the workhouse but had been admitted to the workhouse Infirmary cos they couldn't afford private treatment. It was decided that the postal address of the Infirmary would be on certs so as to remove any stigma to the workhouse,

I have death certs giving a postal address in Greenwich London that I know was the local workhouse Infirmary that later became the local main NHS hospital. Our daughter was born there in 1958!!

I have been trying to find where my grandfather is buried. He died on 8 January 1922 (I have death certificate) and the death was registered in Salford where they were living at the time. I have checked with the local cemeteries and there is no record of his burial - even in a pauper's grave. I have now found a burial record on 2 February 1922 for a man of the same age and name showing a burial in Hurst cemetery and the locality of the record being Manchester Withington Workhouse. I know they were very poor at the time so can anybody tell me if it is possible that this is a record of his burial?

Any help would be appreciated.
